Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGEORGE LLOYD METCALFE Peacefully on Friday, March 6, 2009 at Deer Lodge Hospital, Tower 4, George Lloyd Metcalfe with his wife at his side, passed into the hands of God. George is survived by his wife, Jeannette after 58 years of marriage and by their children and grandchildren: Gerry (Camille and Alexander), Geoff (Leah and Matthew), Robin (Jenna and Danielle), Alix (Joshua and Mariah), Bryan and Jennifer (David and Andrew) and Laura (Sam); his sister Lucille; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Russell and Lucille and by his special aunt Myrtle Rose. George was born in Portage la Prairie on December 13, 1924 and raised by his Aunt Myrtle. He joined the RCAF at 17, where he became a pilot and navigator. George made many friends across Canada as a faithful member of the Wartime Pilots and Observers Association, as well as a member of the Legion for over 60 years. Working as a field engineer, he travelled extensively throughout Canada, surveying by the stars on the Alaskan Highway or power projects like Churchill Falls in Labrador. In 1951, George and Jeannette married and together they raised a large family. He was a lifelong learner, and acquired an extensive knowledge of history, that he shared in many a debate and discussion with friends and family. His was an avid collector of coins, stamps, and books. George was a kind, caring and sensitive human being whose love extended beyond his family. He loved his cats, doggie dog , Tarquin, and the birds and squirrels that visited for their daily feed of peanuts and seeds. George's funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 11 at 2:30 p.m., in St. Andrews Anglican Church, 2700 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3 or Alzheimer's Society of MB, 10-120 Donald, Winnipeg, MB R3C 9Z9.
