Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARGARET A. SMITH May 31, 1913 - March 13, 2009 Margaret Alison Smith of Winnipeg returned to her Lord, in the New Jerusalem, on March 13, 2009. Margaret was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on May 31, 1913. At the age of five months, she contracted infantile paralysis. After special treatments in St. Louis, Missouri, by the age of six years, she was able to start walking for a few years, with the aid of a brace and crutches. By the age of 12 years, however, it was necessary for her to use a wheelchair for the remainder of her life. Margaret was able to attend school and pursued piano through the Toronto Conservatory of Music. The joy of her life was attending Sunday School and church. Margaret will long be remembered as a very special person, a warm and caring being who overlooked her own difficulties while extending love and compassion to her fellow man. She will be remembered too, for her tremendous, unwavering faith and steadfast belief in God and Jesus Christ. She was predeceased a number of years ago, by her brother Hume Watson Smith; her niece Joan Helen Stoutenberg; and her sisters, Winstanley McCann and Mary Smith; her mother and father; and a brother-in-law Alex Stoutenberg; and on February 27, 2007, by her elder sister Helen Stoutenberg. She is survived by her niece Linda Bischoff and Linda's husband Peter, and family; a nephew Gordon McCann, his wife Freda and family; a niece Judy Martens; all of Calgary and numerous great-nieces and nephews, as well as many relatives in Scotland. Gordon and Linda meant so very much to Margaret for their loving, caring attention over the years. A special thank you to her dear friends, Jean Hunter, Donna Martens, Winnie Wilkinson, Alda Horrill, Emily Klassen and other friends who meant so much to her; and to Nurse Judy and the staff of West Park Manor, One North, for the very considerate care they gave her. A funeral service, (no viewing), will be held at Calvary Temple, 400 Hargrave St. at Cumberland Avenue, (the A.H. Argue Building, in the Buntain Chapel) on Tuesday, March 17 at 1:00 p.m. Interment to follow at Kildonan Presbyterian Cemetery, 2373 Main Street North. In lieu of flowers, it was Margaret's final request that a donation be made in her memory to a charity of your choice. Margaret Alison has had a place in my heart all my life. Her father John Smith emigrated to Canada from Galloway Scotland, where some of the old family still live. Although we never met in person, I and others kept in touch, and she has been, and will continue to be remembered fondly by her family in Scotland. With heartfelt thanks to those who cared for her. - Posted by: relatives from Scotland (Family) on: Mar 16, 2009
