JAMES WESLEY SHURVELL On Friday, March 13, 2009, James Wesley Shurvell passed away in Westman Nursing Home, Virden, Manitoba at the age of 95 years. Wesley Shurvell was born in Beulah, Manitoba on October 12, 1913 to Herbert and Annie Shurvell. He was predeceased by his first wife, Merle Bardwell, daughter Sandra, brothers Terry, Clifford, Murray, Arthur, William and Lloyd Shurvell. Wesley is survived by his loving wife Norma, sisters Doreen Whyte, Olive Thorkelson, and brother Earle (Marcia) Shurvell, sons Ron (Helen), Jim (Vivian), Kelvin (Debbie Wright), son-in-law Stan Bryant (Bonnie), daughters-in-law Sheila Lockhart (Art) and Judy Campbell (Colin), 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Wesley began his career repairing and painting grain elevators in various towns in southern Manitoba and Saskatchewan. In 1937 Wes obtained the position of Grain Buyer at Dalny, Manitoba and Alameda, Saskatchewan for Western Canada Flour Mills. Wesley joined the Royal Canadian Air Force as a wireless operator/air gunner in 1942. He trained and served in Canada and the European Theatre. On June 28, 1944 Wesley was shot down over Metz, France. He evaded capture and was repatriated with the British to fly from Orly Airport, France to London, England arriving on September 8, 1944. In 1945 Wesley joined the Winnipeg Post Office. He retired in 1976 as Postmaster at Norwood Grove in St. Boniface, Winnipeg, Manitoba. In 1975 Wesley married Norma Bryant and they resided in Miniota, Manitoba. Wes and Norma spent 16 winters in Apache Junction, Arizona, and three winters in BC. Wes and Norma spent many happy hours camping and fishing. Wesley also enjoyed the sport of golf (especially the 19th hole). A service of remembrance will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at Holy Trinity Church in Miniota at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Wesley's name to any charity of choice.
