GLEN EDWARD HIRST It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Glen Hirst, aged 67, on March 13, 2009, at St. Boniface Hospital with his family by his side after a hard fought battle with cancer. Glen was born in Riverton, MB on May 30, 1941, and was the sixth of ten children. The family moved to Lac du Bonnet in 1953 where he resided his entire life. He married his teenage sweetheart, Blythe, on April 15, 1961, and together they raised three children. He was employed with the Agassiz (Sunrise) School Division as the Transportation and Maintenance Supervisor and retired with 30 years of service in 2001. Glen was always very community-minded and served for 25 years with the Town Council, 17 of those years as Mayor. He was instrumental in the construction of the new water plant and also served on the Board when the new Community Centre was built. He was also proud to have been a Marriage Commissioner in the Province of Manitoba for many years and performed over 400 marriages. He took great pride in the care of his home and yard on the Winnipeg River. There wasn't a blade of grass out of place. He was very meticulous and organized, and was always fair and honest in anything he did. He was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren and was always interested in what they were doing. He left them all a great legacy and will be missed. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife Blythe, sons Calvin (Yvonne), Grant (Kathy) and daughter Shannon (Randy Worona) and precious grandchildren Anthony, Alia, Austin, Nicholas and Dane. He is also survived by sisters Myrtle Helgason, Rosalie Szmerski (Stan), Hazel Pohl (Bob), Beatrice Holm (Allan), Marlene Rollins, Laurel Torgerson and sisters-in-law Mayme Hirst, Joanne Hirst and Joan Hirst, mother-in-law Nora Malyk, brother-in-law Bruce Malyk (Debbie) and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Gordon Hirst and Loreley Bogle, stepfather Ralph Bogle, brothers Allan, Ronald and Arnold and brothers-in-law Durwood Rollins, Jerry Torgerson and Victor Helgason. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 20, 2009, at 1:00 p.m. at the Lac du Bonnet Community Centre. In lieu of flowers, if friends and family so desire, donations can be made to Pinawa CancerCare, Pinawa, Manitoba. The family would like to thank staff at Pinawa Hospital, Pinawa CancerCare, St. Boniface Hospital and St. Boniface CancerCare for their wonderful care and compassion over the past four years. We can shed tears that he is gone, Or we can smile because he lived. We can close our eyes and pray that he will come back, Or we can open our eyes and see all he has left. Our hearts can be empty because we can't see him. Or we can be full of love we shared. We can turn our backs on tomorrow because of yesterday, We can remember him and only that he is gone, Or we can cherish his memory and let it live on. We can cry and close our minds, be empty and turn back, Or we can do what he'd want, Smile, open our eyes, love and go on. Rest in peace, Dad.
