DENIS MCKINLEY RINGLAND With overwhelming sadness we announce the passing of Denis McKinley Ringland on Sunday, March 15, 2009 at the Grace General Hospital in Winnipeg. Denis, loving husband and father, will be missed by wife Jean, sons Tim (Shelley) and Colin (Marilyn); daughters Toby (Craig) and Gloria (Bob); and families. Known by Grand Dad, Grandpa and Papa he will be sorely missed by his grandchildren: Krista, Kendra, Tim Jr., great-grandson Charles, Erin, Robin, Alexander, Ben, Malyka, great-grandson Andrea, Sarah, Mark, Alison and Ryan. He will also be missed by family and friends in England, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, the United States and Canada. He was predeceased by his first wife Audrey and son Robin. Denis was born and raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland. After schooling he joined the British army and then he immigrated to Canada where he served with the Royal Canadian Regiment, retiring in 1973 with the rank of Major. He then worked with the provincial government until his retirement in 1989. He met Audrey in Vancouver while in the RCR. They settled in communities across Canada and in Germany, raised their family, finally settling in Winnipeg. They were wed for 26 years before Audrey's passing in 1981. Denis and Jean married in Winnipeg in 1991. Throughout his life Denis was an avid sportsman. He was a certified diver with 3 Fathoms; Denis and Jean enjoyed their honeymoon by scuba diving in Micronesia. He could be found at the Charleswood Golf Club in Spring and Summer; curling in winters at the Granite or playing racquetball at the Canoe Club. A longtime season ticket holder, he was a big fan of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He proudly became a Shriner and was a member of the Khartum Scooters. He remained active in later life travelling to various parts of the world with Portugal being a favourite destination with him and Jean. Denis, dad and Grand dad, your wry smile, your many stories of adventure, the corny jokes and puns will be dearly missed. A memorial service will be held Friday, March 20 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Anglican Church, 3830 Roblin Blvd., Winnipeg. A private family interment will follow at a later date. Flowers are graciously declined. Family and friends are invited to make donations to the Robin Charles Ringland Memorial Scholarship, in care of Tim Ringland, 227 Wescana Street, Headingley, MB R4J 1B6.
