OTTO DICK On March 26, 2009, Otto Dick, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather went to his heavenly home. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Elfriede Dick (nee Toews); children Walter Dick (Wilma), Harold Dueck (Judith), Theodore Dick (Betty), Ruth Richert (John), Edith Dyck (Marvin); grandchildren Sam (Heidi), Nathan (Lisa), Thom (Tara), Mary (Jeremy), Jennifer, Adrian (Patricia), Andrea, Stefan, David, Kathryn (Matthew), Elise, Joanna, Jonathan, Stephen; and great-grandchildren Kezia, Simon, Jersey, Anastasia, Zachary, Malachi, Seth, Landen, and Emily. He was predeceased by his parents Heinrich and Anna Dick, as well as sister Charlotte Toews (nee Dick). Otto was born 1919 in Russia amidst the turmoil of the Russian revolution. The family immigrated to Canada in 1924 and established life on the farm at Glenlea, MB. The difficult years in the 1930s ingrained in him the values of thrift, hard work, making the most out of very little and generosity. In 1945 he married Elfriede Toews. Together they built a vibrant life that included faith, family and many friends. In 1998 after 73 years on the banks of the Red River they moved to their current home in St. Vital For more than two decades Otto volunteered with Ten Thousand Villages (Mennonite Central Committee) repairing damaged handicrafts from developing countries, making them saleable and providing economic assistance to those in need. Dad loved helping his children and grandchildren on projects, walking, reading, attending church activities, and most of all, being with his family. Otto read the Bible regularly - a practice which supported him through good and difficult times. Every Sunday, he read Psalm 90 in its entirety beginning with the first two verses: Lord, you have been our dwelling-place, in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. Viewing and visitation Monday, March 30 at 7:30 p.m. at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, Winnipeg. Interment at the Glenlea Cemetery, Tuesday, March 31 at 11:00 a.m., with funeral service following at 2:00 p.m. at the Fourth Avenue Bible Church, Niverville. Donations in Otto's memory may be made to the Ten Thousand Village's Gift of Hope (261-6387) or Mennonite Central Committee (261-6381 ext. 246).
