MARY ELSIE CROSS (nee NYSETVOLD) July 29, 1938 - March 23, 2009 Suddenly, after a lengthy and courageous battle with multiple sclerosis; it is with deep regret that we announce the passing of our beloved Mary Elsie Cross on Monday, March 23rd, 2009 at the Grace General Hospital in Winnipeg at the age of 70 years. Remaining to forever cherish Mary's memory are her devoted husband Don; children, Dawna (Scott), Becki, Cindy (Greg), Derek (Jenn); cherished grandsons, Hanz, Zack, Bram; sisters, Madel, Sue (Lawrence), Linda (Glen), and brother Dave; sister-in-law Joan (Rene), and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her parents Henry and Lillian Nysetvold; her infant daughter Lori-Ann; sister Joan and mother and father in-law George and Louise Cross. Mary was born in Chauvin, Alberta on July 29, 1938. She met Don when he was stationed in Wainwright, Alberta. They married November 29, 1959 in Chauvin, Alberta. Mary worked as a bank teller for several banks but her true calling was being a wife and mother. After several postings Mary, Don and family settled in Winnipeg. She was active in Brownies and the church guild. She cherished family get togethers and all holidays. She loved spending time with her many friends, and was devoted to her grandsons and would brag to everyone within ear shot of their lives and accomplishments. They were truly her Sunshine . In her youth, Mary actively curled and enjoyed watching the sport. She had a great rivalry with her brother and sisters in Alberta over which football team was superior, the Blue Bombers or the Eskimos. Go Bombers! Mary's keen sense of humour was evident in the many times she sent her children to school with Tomato Soup Cake in their lunches. (Ha,Ha) Baking for holidays, birthdays, and school events was something she and the rest of us enjoyed. While she was able she enjoyed her flower beds, vegetable garden and canning wonderful pickles and relishes. Mary has spent the last six years living at Deer Lodge Centre. Although, it was a difficult for Mary to adjust to the loss of her independence she adapted and continued in her caring ways by ensuring that the other residents were well cared for. She made many friends with the staff and residents. On Monday, March 30 Mary's funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel of The Good Shepherd, 2235 Silver Avenue off Whytewold Road. The family would like to extend our thanks to the staff at Deer Lodge for all their care and compassion towards Mary. We would ask you to help us celebrate Mary's memory by stepping forward to do a little extra for someone today. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Manitoba, 400-141 Bannatyne Avenue, Wpg, MB R3B 0R3. Her Golden Heart Her golden heart stopped beating Two willing hands are still, The one who toiled so hard for us Is resting in God's will. But as we look with gladness Upon the years she trod, We Bless those years of happiness And leave the rest to God.
