Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDOREEN JOHNSON WOOD Doreen Johnson Wood died at age 72 on Sunday, March 22, 2009, from complications due to a bus accident six months ago. She resided in Larkspur, California since 1970. Born in Winnipeg, Canada, Doreen earned a degree from the University of Manitoba and a Masters Degree in Behavioral Science from the University of Wisconsin. She focused her career on rehabilitation training for the disabled and travel writing. As a lover of words and a wonderful storyteller, Doreen completed a book entitled Profoundly Ordinary , stories of people who survived devastating disabilities. Doreen was also an avid traveller and her adventures fueled many of her most popular works. In 2009 she won a Solas Award for The Sassi di Matera and the Question of Poverty, an essay on life in the impoverished village that Carlo Levi called home in 1935. A longtime member of Left Coast Writers , she was much loved by her literary community, some of whom will be helping to archive her work. She was also an active member of PEO, AAUW, Redwoods Presbyterian Church, and volunteered at the Lark Theater. Predeceased by her husband Donald, she is survived by her daughter Tamara and granddaughter Kayla of Kentfield, and her son Frank (wife Gema) and granddaughter Sofia of San Jose. Doreen is also survived by her siblings, Sylvia, Petsy, Madeleine (husband Brian), Frederick (wife Faye), Frank, Caroline, Dianna and Thomas, as well as many nieces and nephews. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, April 11, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at: Redwoods Presbyterian Church, 110 Magnolia Avenue in Larkspur, California 94939. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Children's Program at Redwoods Presbyterian Church or volunteer for an organization in need.

Doreen was my older sister and a wonderful person. Although she and I lived far apart, when I would call her I always felt so good. When Doreen came to Winnipeg it was always such a fun time. We are so glad that she had a chance to get to know our children and Grandchildren, whom they called Aunt Doreen - especially her Yoga lessons. We were always excited to hear about her travels around the world, receive postcards and read her books which she loved so much. Doreen will be truly missed - may she rest in peace. Regarding my sister Doreen Johnson Wood, I'd like to say I'll miss her very much and I'll miss travelling to San Francisco to see her and her family. One thing I remember about Doreen was when she was younger, while still living in Winnipeg, she used to enjoy making fudge.
