MARTIN CHANAS September 24, 1924 - April 2, 2009 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and brother on Thursday, April 2, 2009 at the Grace Hospital. Martin was called to rest in the Lord's care after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Martin was raised in Silver, MB on the family farm. In later years, he was employed at International Harvester until his retirement. Martin excelled at many talents. He was a mechanic, carpenter and an all around handyman. He could always be counted on to help out his family and friends. Besides his family, one of his greatest joys was his love of gardening. He always believed a bright and colourful flower garden created happiness in the home. He will be forever remembered by his wife of 52 years, Frances; daughter Deborah (Ivan) Perija; son Wayne (Karin) Chanas; grand-children, Shannon and Brittany Perija and Katrina and Brianna Chanas; sister Mary Malcolm of Detroit; and brother Kenneth (Helen) of Vancouver, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Anna; brothers, Mike and Peter; and sister Stella. The family would like to thank the WRHA Palliative Care Program, especially Tracy, Tammi-Lee and the homecare workers. We also thank the staff and doctors at Seven Oaks Hospital, Grace Hospital and CancerCare Manitoba. We appreciate all the care, support and compassion given to Martin and his family. Prayers will be sung 7:00 p.m. Sunday, April 5 at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 6 at St. Joseph Ukrainian Catholic Church, 250 Jefferson Ave. Interment will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba. God saw you getting tired, When a cure was not to be. He wrapped you in His loving arms, And whispered, Come to Me. You suffered much in silence, Your spirit did not bend, You faced your pain with courage, Until the very end. You tried so hard to stay with us, Your fight was all in vain. God took you in His loving arms, And freed you from your pain. You didn't deserve what you went through, And so He gave you rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.
