Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJAMES HOOPER April 9, 1928 - April 12, 2009 Early Easter Sunday morning, April 12, 2009 James passed peacefully after recently celebrating his 81st birthday. He lost his fight with liver cancer. Our Dad was born to Elizabeth and Francis Hooper on April 9, 1928 in Govan, Glasgow, Scotland and was the third oldest of 10 children. He was very proud of his Royal Navy Service as an O/Telegraphist. James married the love of his life, Mary McGill on October 21, 1948 and they eventually immigrated to Canada in 1957 with their three children and added to their family with one Canadian-born daughter in 1969. Our Dad's whole life was dedicated to his wife, his family and helping others however and whenever he could. He retired from Centra Gas in 1990 after many years as a meter reader and then gas serviceman. James was an active member of Prince Edward Legion, Branch 81 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He was a life member of Ibrox Lodge in Glasgow and a past member of Three Pillars Lodge #169 Winnipeg, and also a Khartum Temple Shriner. He was formerly a Secretary Treasurer with the Sons of Scotland Mearns Camp. Dad was predeceased by his parents and infant sister Jeanie, his wife of 50 years, Mary (1999), grandson Gregg Johnston (2005), and siblings, Elizabeth Evans, Louis, Frank and Joseph Hooper (all in 2007). Left to mourn his passing are his son James and three daughters, Frances Ross (Glen), Joyce Hooper and Mary Kathleen Johnston, as well as 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Helen Doyle and Robert (Bev) of Winnipeg, John (Margaret) and William Hooper of Scotland. Dad will also be missed by his many nieces, nephews and friends scattered worldwide. Special thanks to nurses and other medical staff at Concordia Hospital and CancerCare. As Dad requested, cremation has taken place. A service will be held Thursday, April 16 at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of Voyage Funeral Home, 220 Hespeler Ave. Donations to Salvation Army or your charity of choice. Cheerio for now, Dad!
