ELMO HAFSTEIN HELGASON Peacefully, with family around him, Elmo Hafstein Helgason passed on at the Ste. Rose General Hospital on April 11, 2009. Elmo, the son of Hermann and Holmfridur Helgason, was born in Ashern, MB on May 2, 1924. He was raised in Ashern with his brothers Marvin and Alvin. Elmo spent many summers during his younger years at Silver Bay with his aunt and uncle Stjana and Bjossi Jonasson. He joined the Navy during the Second World War at the age of 18 and served until the war ended in 1945. He met his true love Betty Nichols who had come to Ashern as a school teacher in 1949. They married in 1950 and raised their three children, Heather, Robin and Randy. Elmo was a lifelong environmentalist who worked hard to protect the natural resources of the region, especially Lake Manitoba. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty; his children, Heather, Robin (Bill) Finney and Randy (Millie) Helgason; his grandchildren, Michael (Stacey) Penner, Tiffaney Penner, Stephanie Penner (Ryan DeGrave), Ashleigh Penner, Leigh Finney (Darren Tindall), Leifur Finney, Cody Helgason (Desi-Rae Anderson) and Shayna Helgason; his great-grandchildren, Soren Elmo Tindall, Lucas DeGrave, and Brandon Hunter; his nephew Darryl (Melody) Helgason and their daughter Jaimie Leigh along with many close friends and relatives. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 16, 2009 at the Ashern Legion Hall with Pastor Bill Watson officiating. Service will conclude at the hall and a family interment will be held at a later date in the Betel (Silver Bay) Churchyard Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald St., Suite 200, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6. Father and Grandfather Broken is the family circle, Our dear one is passed away, Passed from earth and earthly darkness, Into bright and perfect day; But we all must cease to languish, Over the one we love, Strive to be prepared to meet him, In the better world above.
