HELMUT WERNER KIES August 17, 1933 - April 18, 2009 Peacefully, at the Riverview Health Centre in the Palliative Care Unit (3E), Hal passed away with his wife at his side on April 18, 2009 at 6:45 a.m., at 75 years of age. Hal was predeceased by his parents Richard and Olga Kies, his sister Hildegard Kies, his brothers Manfred, Rudolf, Alfred, Gerhard and Friedel Kies and mother-in-law Yvonne Huryk. He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years Shirley Huryk, his adopted daughter Roxanne (Chad) Heppenstall and two cherished grandsons, Austin and Tristin. He also leaves to mourn his passing his brother Gunter Kies and family of Zeven, Germany, sister Anita Klintworth and family of Oldendorf, Germany, his sister-in-law Lillian Auramenko, his niece Anita (Kirk) Labossiere and family, his nephew Richard Kies, all of Regina, SK, his brother-in-law Wayne (Marianna) Huryk of Winnipeg, MB, the company partner and long time friend Robert Chernetz of Oakbank, MB, and all the crew of Koreman Concrete Flooring Ltd., numerous nieces and nephews in Germany and numerous friends and business associates. Helmut was born in Wiersdorf, Germany, then raised in Rhadereistedt, Germany. He came to Canada in May of 1953 to start a new life where he spent the next 56 years. He worked on a farm in Meadows, MB and later moved to Vancouver, BC, where he worked on the fishing docks. It was there he met Eli Hurst of Pacific Concrete who hired him to work in the concrete construction trade. Helmut returned to Winnipeg in 1958 and continued to work in the concrete construction trade until November 2007. A special thanks to dear friends Lise LeClair and Angele Gavin for their love and support during Hal's final days. Special thanks to all the staff of 3 East at Riverview, Dr. Piotr Czaykowski and staff of Cancercare Manitoba - MacCharles Unit 3, Dr. Louis Smith and staff at Dakota Medical. Thank you to all family, friends and co-workers for their love and support through this difficult time. May he rest in peace knowing that all his love, compassion, wisdom and humour will live in our hearts forever. Donations can be made to Cancercare Manitoba or a charity of your choice. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Thomson in the Park, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. on Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. with interment to follow.
