GARY LEONARD BATEMAN, P.Eng., MBA, CA, TEP Suddenly at his home in Oakville, Ontario on Saturday, April 18, 2009, Gary passed away. He leaves to mourn his passing, his partner Heather Ridge, father Leonard Bateman and stepmother Mary of Winnipeg. Gary was predeceased by his mother Eileen Elizabeth Bateman (Campbell) in 1996. He is survived by his three sons Cameron (Daisy James) of San Francisco, David (Miriam Mossoba) of Washington D.C. and their year-old son Sebastian David, and Benjamin of Burlington; sisters, Donna Blakeman Welch (Terry Panych) and Joyce Bateman (Darrell Hancock) and their children Calvin and A.J. (Alexandra Joyce), all of Winnipeg. Gary was born in Winnipeg on October 22, 1947. As a child he spent many happy summers at the family cottage in Ponemah, Manitoba and his first job was as a paperboy there where he learned many valuable life skills. He graduated from Kelvin High School where he thrived and enjoyed experiences ranging from performing in the Gilbert and Sullivan production of the Gondoliers to participating in the United Nations student forum where he met his future wife Sharon, mother of their three sons. They were married in 1967 and moved to Burlington upon his graduation from the University of Manitoba where he received his degree in Electrical Engineering in 1970. He received his MBA from McMaster University in 1975 (the same year his first child was born) and his designation as a Chartered Accountant in 1977. Gary was an accomplished educator, a pioneer in the application of scientific research and development tax planning, an expert in trust and estate taxation, an author of many books related to taxpayers' rights, a media commentator, and founding partner of Bateman MacKay Chartered Accountants of Burlington, Ontario. Among his many interests were the science fiction conferences he attended all over the world, often with his sons. Some of his favourite science fiction authors, Heinlein and Asimov, were also engineers. Gary will be sorely missed by his family, friends, staff and clients, all of whom depended on him in so many ways.
