Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCHARLES ROBERT HENRY (RED) TOWNSEND March 1, 1920 - April 20, 2009 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, brother and uncle at the age of 89 years. Red is predeceased by his wife Joyce, his parents John and Elsie Townsend, brother Frank and sister Doris. Red is remembered by his son Andy; daughters, Bernice (Dennis) Gislason and Caron (Tim) Clarke; grandchildren, Amber Gislason, Carli (Arron) Townsend, April (Mark) Gislason, Joel, Amanda and Jeff Clarke; daughter-in-law Sharon (Glen) Basset; sisters and brothers, Peggy Franklin, Jackie Richter, Jim (Ruby) Townsend, Jenne (Mel) Markwart, David (Ida) Townsend, Gwen (Agnar) Thorlacius along with numerous nieces and nephews. Red was born in Clare, SK and moved to Nipawin, SK in 1924 where he attended school and worked in the area until he enlisted in the South Saskatchewan Regiment in 1940. Red purchased one of the last $5.00 per quartersection homesteads before enlisting. After the war, Red married Joyce and farmed this homestead until they moved to Ashern in 1955. Red and Joyce farmed with his brother Dave until they retired in 1992 and moved to town in Ashern. Red was very involved in this community and sat on various committees, including Ashdale Holdings, Elks, the Legion, ICCA, the Lundar Bull Sale, Centennial Hall, Veterinary Board and the Manitoba Hog Marketing Commission. Red was also very involved in the Hereford Association and the One Box Hunt. Red was an avid outdoorsman and, as a boy, drove dog teams. Red enjoyed big game hunting and fishing, and in later years, took Caron's children along with him. After retiring, Red's favorite pastimes were golfing and attending hockey games. We'll Miss You, Dad A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 26, 2009 at the Ashern Centennial Hall with Pastor Bill Watson officiating. A family interment will follow at the Ashern Municipal Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be all those in attendance, especially his hunting buddies. The family wish to thank the Home Care staff and workers with special thanks to Lynda Mantik. The family also wish to thank the nursing staff at the Lakeshore General Hospital in Ashern.
