MONA MARY MCLEOD 1914 - 2009 To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield - from Ulysses by Alfred Lord Tennyson It is with sadness that the family announces the passing of our sister, sister-in-law, aunt, friend and colleague, Mona Mary McLeod in Winnipeg, Manitoba on Monday, April 20, 2009. Remaining to cherish her memory are her sister Geneva Walker; brother-in-law Tom Walker; sister-in-law Joan McLeod; sister-in-law Eleanor McLeod; her many nephews and nieces and their families, along with countless friends and colleagues. She was predeceased by her father Thomas McLeod, her mother Abigail McPherson McLeod, her sisters, Grace, Eva, Isabel and brother-in-law Frank, her brothers Gerald, Ken and Rorie and sister-in-law Lou. Mona was born on May 14, 1914 in Calabogie Lake in Renfrew County, Ontario and grew up in Bounty, Saskatchewan and in Pine Falls, Manitoba. Mona became a Registered Nurse, graduating from Grace Hospital School of Nursing in Winnipeg, Manitoba followed by a Certificate in Public Health Nursing in 1946. She went on to receive her B.Sc. and M.A. from Columbia University with graduate studies in Psychiatric Nursing at Ohio State University, University of Minnesota and Columbia University. Her life experiences included staff nursing in hospitals in Winnipeg and rural Manitoba and Public Health Nursing with the Manitoba Department of Health. She went on to become a Professor of Nursing at the University of Manitoba from 1958 until her retirement. The health and well-being of individuals in countries less fortunate were of utmost importance to Mona, and she championed these causes by giving generously to numerous charities and foundations until her passing. Mona also created and funded a scholarship in her name at the University of Manitoba - School of Nursing, with numerous recipients going on to attain their Nursing Degree. During the last years of her life Mona resided at Fred Douglas Heritage House and at The Convalescent Home of Winnipeg. The family would like to extend their appreciation for the kindness shown to Mona by both residents and staff at Heritage House and The Convalescent Home of Winnipeg. A memorial service will be held in Winnipeg at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at 1291 McGillivray Blvd. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to a world peace organization of choice.
