ASSUNTA GUERCIO November 10, 1911 April 21, 2009 After a long and fulfilling life, Assunta Guercio passed away peacefully April 21, 2009 at the Poseidon Care Centre. Born in 1911 in Grimaldi, Italy, she was the last surviving child of Rosina and Giuseppe Fiorino. In her early 20's Assunta married Alberto Guercio. They had two sons, Luigi and Emilio. For many years she raised the boys on her own. First while her husband was a soldier in Africa and again while he was a prisoner of war during the Second World War. Through the unfortunate time her fiercely independent and determined spirit was awakened. This same independent spirit could be witnessed well into her early 90's as she insisted on walking or taking a bus to complete her errands rather than accept an offer of a car ride. These last few years of reduced mobility were difficult for someone as independent as her. In January of 1953 she along with her two boys landed in England to reunite with her husband and start a new life in Wales. In 1956 the family moved yet again, to Winnipeg this time, to be closer to relatives. Again her resilient spirit shone. Nana as everyone called her was happiest amongst family and friends. She was one of the most giving and selfless women you could meet. She never gave unsolicited advice but did dole out plenty of unconditional love along with her homemade bread. She touched many and we are all better people for having known her. Left to mourn her loss are her sons, Luigi (Giuseppina) and Emilio (Karolyn). Her grandchildren, Alberto (Karen), Luigi (Bobby), Susie (Kent), Steven (Allison), Rob (Madalina) and Jamie (Anna), great-grandsons, Adam, Evan, Ethan and Aidan. She was predeceased by her husband Alberto (1973), grandson Brock (2004) and her siblings Pasquale, Augustino, Amedeo, Elvira and Antonio. Thanks goes out to the staff on the 3rd floor of Poseidon care Centre for their compassionate care for the last three years and to all of her friends and relatives who visited. Your presence brightened her days. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday April 27, 2009 at the Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 510 River Avenue. Viewing will be held one-half hour prior to the service. Father Sam Argenziano officiating. Entombment to follow at Chapel of Eternal Memories Mausoleum, 1501 Waverley Street. Should friends also desire, donations may be made in Assunt'a memory to the Holy Rosary Parish. Sappiamo che siete ora nel cielo ma le nostre memorie di voi dureranno per sempre. Arriverderci mamma/nana finche non ci incontriamo ancora.
