Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALEXANDRA LYSAK 1912 - 2009 Alexandra Lysak was born on September 18, 1912 to John and Anisia Lysak in Dubiny, Wolyn, Ukraine. On Saturday, April 25, 2009, at the age of 96 years and seven months, she quietly slipped away to her eternal rest. She leaves to mourn her three sisters, Vera Shakotko, Nina Hrychuk and Ruth (Malcolm) Hayward, sister-in-law, Miriam Lysack and her special family, niece, Sandra Hrychuk, Carole and Bob Barber and their children and grandchildren as well as her many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, sisters Valentina Lysak and Nadia Shelpuk, brothers George and Dan Lysack and brothers-in-law Nikifor Shelpuk, Alexander Shakotko, and William Hrychuk. Alexandra arrived in Canada with her parents and siblings on July 21, 1929. The family settled in Minitonas, Manitoba. Though life was difficult she always had a positive attitude and worked hard to learn the language and seized every opportunity to improve her lot in life. In 1934 she joined her sister Nadia in Winnipeg where they were both employed at the Children's Hospital. Alexandra remained there for 17 years working in the food industry. It was at this time when her proudest moment was becoming a Canadian citizen. In 1952 she became the head cook at the Municipal Hospitals where she worked for 25 years until her retirement. During most of her life in Winnipeg she was a member of Broadway-First Baptist Church. On November 26, 2000 she was named an Honourary Deacon for her many years of faithful service. This honour she treasured very deeply. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service to honour her life will be held at Broadway-First Baptist Church, 790 Honeyman Avenue, on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Broadway-First Baptist Church, The Canadian Bible Society or The Christian Children's Fund. Aunt Sacha (Aunt Alex) was a notorioius crocheter (crochestist?). She had very few compulsive habits, but crocheting was one of them. When she visited us in Toronto, I swear she must have gone through rolls and rolls of crochet yarn, and churned out hundreds of table covers and coasters, many of which I have and treasure to this day. She taught my mother, who is of British extraction, how to cook. Borsht and cabbage rolls etc.. And when she left Dan and Miriam's family home - my childhood home, you could be sure the freezer was full of dilectable Ukranian style food to keep "us men" going until her next visit! And my Mom Miriam DID appreciatively learn a lesson or two about cooking. She took her learned recipes to her (essentially British style) cooking club which she passed off with full references to her sister-in-law source, and to great cudos. I suppose she had to give true references to her source of cooking, as nobody could possibly believe she made up such good recipes herself, they were so good.
