Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDR. STEPHEN C. STOTHERS Stephen Stothers will be dearly missed by all the people who loved him during his lifetime and carry with them feelings of gratitude for time spent in his company. Stephen passed away at his home on Wednesday afternoon, April 29, 2009, engaging in his favourite past time, reading the newspaper. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Marilyn; daughters Joanne (Dave) Branton and Susan (Bob) Fedorchuk; sons, Scott (Barb) Stothers and Steven (Monica) Stothers; and grandchildren, Tristin, Aiden (Jessica), Colin, Christie, Kaitlyn, Brendan, Fergus, Samantha, Tamara. Steve was born on October 3, 1929 in Essex, Ontario to parents, Stephen and Agnes. He spent his childhood in Arthur, Ontario growing up with four sisters: Ruth, Kay, Agnes and Elizabeth. Ruth (Jim) Schultz and Elizabeth Millar will treasure his memory along with Sheila Inniss, Marilyn's sister, and his first cousins, nieces, nephews and many relatives. He was predeceased by his parents and his sisters Kay Whale and Agnes Bradbury. Steve went on to university receiving a BSA (OAC) 1951; MSC (Michigan State) 1952; and PHD (Michigan State) 1954 specializing in Animal Nutrition. In 1955, he came to the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg as an Associate Professor, Department of Animal Science, eventually becoming Department Head, retiring as a Senior Scholar. Over his 39 year teaching career, he earned the respect of many students, maintaining contact with them through the years. He fondly recalled his time coaching intramural football! Study leaves were spent in UofA Edmonton, MIT Boston, Texas A M, Aberdeen Scotland, Australia, with a World Bank assignment in China. He was the author/coauthor of many conference proceedings, published research and extension articles in the area of Nutrition. He was a life member of the Manitoba Institute of Agrologists. Steve was known to his grandchildren as Gramps . They enjoyed many Sunday meals with him and listening to him sing in his choir(s). Knowing of his love and devotion to the Bison Male Chorus for 25 years, his whole family tried to attend at least one concert a year. His children appreciated his work in organizational and officiating capacities on provincial (Manitoba Marlins), national (CASA) and international swim meets where they participated. Steve's talent of organization was shared with UofM Retirees committees, church meetings, and the Board of a Seniors' housing project. His reunions with OAC year 1951 life-long friends were special events. Friends enjoyed his conversations during the Gourmet club dinners and a curling team used his 'skills' during winter months. Local sports were also a favourite of Steve's, attending Blue Bomber games, Winnipeg Jets, and any sport or activity of the children and grandchildren, most notably basketball and soccer. Dog walking was a daily event shared by his faithful companion Lexy. In lieu of flowers, donations would be greatly appreciated to the University of Manitoba's S. C. Stothers Award in Animal Science - for a fourth year student with the highest grade in the Capstone course dealing with issues in animal agriculture - sent in care of the Department of Animal Science. This Award began at Steve's request when he retired from the UofM. Service of remembrance will be held at Trinity United Church, 933 Summerside, Winnipeg on Wednesday, May 6 at 2:00 p.m. with private interment later in St. Vital Cemetery. The family is grateful for the response of the WFPS and Victoria Hospital staff, especially Joanne's co-workers.
