HERBERT (BERT) GERALD GIBSON It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bert Gibson on Friday, May 8, 2009 at the age of 82 years. Bert's family was his greatest joy and remaining to forever cherish his memory are his loving wife of 59 years, Anne Gibson; son Donnie; daughters Carolyn, Lorie (Mark), Cathy (Russ) and one grandchild Ashley (Clay); sisters Joyce, Jean, Betty; brothers Walter, Cedric, Cecil; sister-in law Lucy; brother-in law Steve; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Bert was predeceased by his mother Laura and father Leroy; brothers Lou, Frank, Bill, Victor and brothers-in-law William and Emil. Dad was born in Treherne, Manitoba on October 8, 1926. He joined the Air Force in 1945 and was a photographer until he retired from the service in 1970. Dad then worked at the Bank of Canada in Winnipeg as a stationary engineer and retired at the age of 65. He married his beautiful wife Anne in 1950. Our family life consisted of moving every couple of years to different Air Force bases in Canada. Dad was a really personable guy, living life to the fullest. He always smiled and loved to tell jokes and funny stories. He welcomed everyone to his home and made sure that they never left hungry; always looking out for others and enjoying helping his friends and family. He enjoyed cross country skiing and could not wait for the first snow fall so he could get out there, even in the bitter cold. As soon as spring arrived he was out riding his bike around Charleswood in the early morning and evening. He kept track of the kilometers that he did daily. He was proud that at the age of 82 years he could still put on six thousand kilometers on his bike in one year. Dad was a member of the Charleswood Legion and an honorary member of the Charleswood Historical Society. Dad and Mom enjoyed going to the legion together to see their old friends. He loved to play crib in the tournaments and also at home with his brother-in-law Steve. He enjoyed going to McDonald's every morning to be with his friends from the coffee club. He was an avid gardener and loved to do the Jumbo puzzle in the paper daily. Dad was our rock; he never let his family down. Even when times were tough he kept going. He always gave us good advice and all the help when it was needed. He loved to sing and still sang even in the hospital with his family at his side. We all love you and miss you dearly. Until we meet again you will be in our hearts forever. For those who wish, viewing will be held on Thursday, May 14, 2009 from 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Memories in Wojcik's Funeral Chapel, 2157 Portage Avenue. Bert's funeral service will be held on Friday, May 15, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in the Charleswood Legion, 6003 Roblin Blvd. Interment will follow in the Bethel Cemetery in Treherne, Manitoba.

  • From the Rogers, please accept our sympathies. It was always a pleasure to bump into Bert whenever we saw him cycling around in Charleswood. He always had a friendly smile and a story to tell. He had a great outlook on life. We will miss seeing him this spring. Patsy, Helen, Tom and families. - Posted by: Patsy Rogers (Friend) on: May 12, 2009
