JOHN JOSEPH NOWOSAD, KSG On Monday, May 11, 2009 at Concordia Hospital, John Nowosad, aged 93 years of Winnipeg. John was born in Seech, Manitoba on December 28, 1915. He was educated in Oakburn and Elphinstone and completed Normal School in Dauphin, Manitoba. Along with his teaching career throughout rural Manitoba, John managed to act as a correspondent for the Dauphin Herald, wrote and published district history books of Keld and Horod, and numerous other publications. In 1941, John married Margaret Waroway who predeceased him in November 1998. In 1983, they were honoured at the Dauphin National Ukrainian Festival as Hospodar and Hospodenya. They were also active members of Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Parish in East Kildonan. In 1942, John joined the Canadian Armed Forces, and while stationed in Ottawa, he took a salesmanship course at Carleton College. He was discharged from the Army in 1945 and became the secretary of the newly formed Ukrainian Catholic Council of Canada where he assisted with the resettlement of Ukrainian refugees after the Second World War. In 1948, he was employed as an agent for the New York Life Insurance Company until becoming President of the National Foodland Company. He restructured the company and later founded Sell-rite Wholesale. John was very active in the Ukrainian community. He was elected in 1980 as National President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress. During this term and his term which he was re-elected to in 1983, John participated in two world congresses of Ukrainians in New York and Toronto, was a guest speaker at various conferences across Canada and attended numerous Ukrainian festivals. He was awarded the Plaque of Appreciation from the Ukrainian Canadian Congress in 1988. John was a founding member of the Ukrainian Knights of Columbus Council in Canada and the United States and served as Grand Knight. He was a founding member of the St. Josaphat's Council of the Third Degree and Fourth Degree member of the Canon Luhovy Council. Throughout his membership to the Knights of Columbus, John was a delegate to the World Catholic Layman's Congress in Rome in 1967, the only Ukrainian delegate to the World Laymen's Consultation in Rome in 1975, and an active participant in the Knights' Millennium of Christianity over the years 1984-1988. These, along with his prayerful devotion to the Knights of Columbus, led to the bestowing of the honour of Knight of St. Gregory in 1982. Other notable contributions to the Ukrainian and broader community were, founding member of the Catholic Foundation of Manitoba, being honoured himself in 1990; service of 25 years on the Board at St. Boniface Hospital; Supreme President of Ukrainian Mutual Benefit Association of St. Nicholas; member of the Shevchenko Foundation of Canada, being honoured with the Shevchenko Medal in 1977; Quarter Century member of the Ukrainian Professional and Business Club of Winnipeg; Board member of Progress-Vera Credit Union; Vice- President of the Children's Aid Society of Winnipeg; Osvita Foundation Honouree, 1996; St. Cyril and Methodius Medal from the Slavic Community; Certificate of Recognition from the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Winnipeg; Jewish Community Certificate of Recognition and Recognition of Community Service in Special Meetings magazine of New York. Left to cherish John's memory are his many nieces and nephews, and dear friends. Prayers will be sung 7:00 p.m. Friday, May 15 at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main Street. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 9:00 a.m. Saturday, May 16 at Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church, Munroe Avenue at Watt Street with Fr. M. Winn officiating. Interment will follow in Holy Family Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory may be made to the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Winnipeg or the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, National Office.
