J. ROY GARDINER It is with great sadness that the family of J. Roy Gardiner announce his death on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 after a brief illness. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Pat, their two children, Lynne Misurka (Ed), Brad (Gladys), grandchildren Sarah Hyslop (Ian), Kate Misurka and Andrew and Brett Gardiner, and great-grandchildren John, Ewan, Gareth and Emily Hyslop as well as many nieces and nephews. Dad was a devoted husband and father. His family was foremost in his life. Roy was born to Mae and Joe Gardiner on October 7, 1922 on the homestead at Sperling, Manitoba. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Curly (Bernice), Emyrse, Bill (Esther), sister Beatrice Weber (Jim) and sister-in-law Noreen Gardiner. He is survived by brother Ken and sister-in-law Lyla. Roy lived in Winnipeg until moving to Lakeland, Manitoba in 1932 where his father farmed. Roy had a wide and varied career. He farmed the family farm during the Second World War as well as commercial fishing on Lake Manitoba. In 1944 he bought the coffee shop in Gladstone, Manitoba. After a year and a half he went into the trucking business hauling gravel in summer and pulp in winter. He then went into road construction and was president of J.R. Gardiner Construction, G.M.W Ltd. and Wildewood Contractors. He was proud to have had a small part in the building of the Red River Floodway. Roy and Pat moved to Winnipeg in 1964. Roy loved the outdoors especially hunting and fishing. He spent many wonderful summers at their cottage in Clearwater Bay, Ontario. He truly enjoyed meeting people and loved talking and reminiscing with friends. Dancing was also a favourite pastime. A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 18 at 1:30 p.m. at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. The family would like to thank Dr. Penner and staff on the 4th floor of the Victoria General Hospital.
