BARBARA LYNN SCHMIDT April 5, 1948 - May 20, 2009 Sadly, after a courageous and lengthy battle with Breast Cancer, Barbara passed away on May 20, 2009. Barb will be deeply missed by her Husband Henry; daughter Lisa; son Kevin (Christina); grandchildren Matthew and Marisa; brother Sam (Peggy) as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Barb was born and grew up in Regina SK, the daughter of Russ and Isabel Rothwell. Post Secondary Education took her to Winnipeg and in 1970 she graduated from The General Hospital School of Nursing. Three years later she married Henry, a former patient. Thus began a journey that took them to Toronto, back to Winnipeg where Lisa and Kevin were born, to Cold Lake, Ab., to Belleville, On., to Portage la Prairie and finally back to Winnipeg in 1989. Despite continuing to work, Barb found time to get involved in many activities. She was a teacher's helper, a volunteer figure skating coach, an assistant hockey coach one year, and was an executive on a swim team and a hockey organization. She liked to golf, spoil her grandchildren and took great pride in the accomplishments of her children. Barb made friends easily, wherever she went. However, spending the last 20 years in Winnipeg allowed her to cultivate and enjoy her best and most enduring friendships. Friendships that nurtured and sustained her especially these past 18 months. At this time, the family would like to pay special thanks to Dr. Patricia Harris and the staff at the Grace Cancer Care. Through your compassion and caring, you stand above the crowd. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Cancer Care Manitoba, ON 1160-675 McDermot Ave, Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9 or the Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3. Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at the Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave, with reception to follow. Chapel Lawn 885 - 9715

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Hi Henry: I hope this email finds you well and happy. I am writing to you because I have found a couple of pictures of Barbara from our elementary school days and also at a high school reunion. I know at the time of Barbara's passing you were looking for pictures and I wasn't able to find any at that time. If you or the children would like these pictures, please email me and I will send them to you. I think of Barbara so often - she was my best friend growing up and we had so many good times together. Russ and Isabelle were like my second parents. Unfortunately, I lost my husband as well. Roy had never been sick a day in his life and all of a sudden in 2013, he became ill, was diagnosed with bile duct cancer and passed away a few weeks later. We were devastated and miss him so much. I am in a new relationship with a wonderful man - I have been given a second chance at life and love. Lloyd is a retired architect and we live in Calgary. We are currently building a new home (which Lloyd designed) and are a few days away from moving into it. Take care of yourself. I hope to hear from you in the near future. - Posted by: Beverley Antal (Childhood friend) on: May 13, 2017
