SOPHIE DOWHY August 10, 1922 - May 22, 2009 There's no greater love than a Mother's love for her children and we felt that love every day of our lives. Mama Sophie, the love of our lives, a precious gift from God, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother slipped away with the angels on May 22, 2009 to be with Dad and our brother Wilf. Mom is survived by her children, Sylvia (Gordon), Gloria (George), and Neil, daughter-in-law Joy; grandchildren, Judd (Jaime), Steven (Shawn), and Jenna; great-grandchildren, Jaxton, Ella, Sophie and Talie; step-grandchildren, Robin and Wendy; step-great-grandchildren, Justin, Keirra and Eliane; her brothers, Walter (Lena), Bill (Elsie), Ben (Claudette) and Maurice (Veronica); her sisters, Patricia (Tom), Ann (Phillip) and many nieces and nephews. Mom was predeceased by her husband Peter, son Wilfred, her parents, one brother and three sisters. Mom was born and raised in Caliento, Manitoba where she had to work very hard on the family farm. As a teenager Mom left home to work at a grocery store in Carlowrie, Manitoba. In 1942 she married her childhood sweetheart Papa Pete and together they raised four children. She went to work at the St. Malo sewing factory when we were all in school. She then went to work at the Vita Hospital as a nurse's aide and later in the laundry. She enjoyed spending time with her family and doing everything she could for us. She attended many of her son's baseball games and her grandchildren's hockey and softball games. She helped look after her granddaughter who always wanted to make real perogies with Gramma Sophie. In the summertime her and Dad enjoyed gardening. They would drive into Winnipeg to deliver vegetables to us along with Mom's homemade jam, pickles, borscht, perogies, cabbage rolls and anything else she made for us. Her and Dad also liked to pick wild mushrooms, strawberries and blueberries which they would pack up and deliver to us in Winnipeg after spending all day picking them. In 2006 Mom was thrilled and honored to have a great-granddaughter named after her. Mom was a loving, hardworking woman who would do anything for us. She was very proud of her family and would always praise and encourage us. Mom's funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Vita Funeral Homes Vita Chapel , Vita, Manitoba with Rev. Dr. Father Gregory Zubacz officiating. Viewing will take place one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place in St. John's Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, Caliento, Manitoba. Pallbearers will be Gordon Bowen, George Slobodzian, Judd Dowhy, Steven Dowhy, Jenna Slobodzian, Bill Skryba, Maurice Skryba. In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB, R3L0K6 or Cancer Care Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, R3E 0V9 in Mom's name would be greatly appreciated. We the family would like to thank the staff of 3 south at the Victoria Hospital. A special thanks to all the outstanding staff at the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg whose kind and compassionate care for Mom was exceptional. Thank you to Reverend Doctor Gregory Zubacz for visiting Mom in the care home. Mom made many sacrifices so we could have a better life. Thank you Mama for your unconditional love, caring heart and support over the years. Mom we love you and miss you. What will we do without you in our lives? Even though we lost our precious mother her love will forever remain in our hearts. Now Heaven has one more angel.
