EARL LEO WILLIAM BENOIT May 7, 1931 May 19, 2009 Peacefully, on May 19, Earl passed away at his residence in Courtenay, B.C. He is survived by his children, Earl (Diane), Bob (Ruby), Pat (Steve), Rick, Mike (Sharon), Phil (Martha), many grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, sister and brother-in-laws and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Gloria, his parents, William and Josephine and his brothers Donald and Murray and his youngest son Scott. Earl was employed with the T. Eaton Company prior to enlisting in the Navy. The family moved to Victoria while he was with the Navy and in 1959 they moved back to Winnipeg where he began his career with the University of Manitoba. For more than 30 years he worked there as a power engineer. He is fondly remembered by his friends and co-workers. After retirement, he pursued another career as a truck driver. He saw a great deal of Canada and the US while driving for Kleysens. After Gloria passed away, the west coast called him back and he returned to B.C., finally settling in Courtenay. He loved to play golf and he passed this love on to his sons and grandsons. He also developed a passion for reading and spent many hours sitting quietly with a book in his hands and his favourite beverage close at hand. He recently returned from a long anticipated 22 day cruise that he shared with his sister-in-law Claire. He enjoyed himself immensely what a wonderful way for him to celebrate his 78th birthday. He will be missed. Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, June 2 at 2:00 p.m. at Green Acres Cemetery (222-3241).

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • My second dad. I grew up with his son Earl Jr. or Little Earl. I spend a lot of time at his house playing toys with Earl Jr., eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and building forts in the yard. I remember playing with toy soldiers in the living room and set one on top of a lamp table. Big Earl said, “Now what I’m wondering, is how he got way up there!” I used to go there for haircuts and would get a nice Navy brushcut from him. I would give him a quarter and he’d say, “Tanks!” He was always very nice to me and later, I worked with him in the Power House at the University of Manitoba. He was well liked and had a lot of friends there. Rest easy Earl, you were one of the good ones. - Posted by: Ron Holland (Friend) on: Jan 11, 2024
