HUGH MAWHINNEY It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of Hugh Mawhinney on May 27, 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer. Hugh was predeceased by his parents, first wife Kathleen, brothers James and John and sister Mary. He leaves to mourn his loving wife Marie, sons Kenneth (friend Donna), Raymond (Heather), stepdaughters Debbie (Ali), Susan (Jason), and grandchildren Lindsay, Andrew, Kyle, Samantha, Marley, Lexine, and Rylee - his sisters Margaret and Beth, sisters-in-law Betty and Ellie along with nephews, nieces, and an endearing circle of friends. Born in the village of Temple just outside Belfast, N. Ireland, he apprenticed as an Iron Turner and in 1952 left the Emerald Isle to begin a new life on the prairies. With an impish grin and wink of the eye he would boast on occasion how he and several of his friends laid the first sidewalks in Winnipeg so that other immigrants could derive the benefit. His first and only employment in Canada was with CNR where beginning as a Machinist, other talents quickly emerged. Be it blarney or bull and with great fortitude and determination he rose to become the regional representative for the International Association of Machinists, a position he held until retirement. In 1988, having earlier suffered the loss of his first wife, Hugh was given a new lease on life through his marriage to soulmate, love and friend, Marie. If there was a second love in Hugh's life beyond family it was the Winnipeg Irish Association. It was here where he bristled with enthusiasm acting as MC for the ever popular Emerald Isle Pavilion and the Irish Tavern Singers. After retirement, Mesa, Arizona became Hugh's second home and he quickly made many wonderful friends from a variety of provinces and states. It was a labour of love for Hugh when he organized many charter flights to N. Ireland becoming the designated ambassador in meetings with the Lord Mayor and other officials. So, it's not surprising that the music of Ireland provided comfort for Hugh in his final days. The family would like to express their appreciation to all the staff at Riverview Health Care Centre for the kindness and compassion they showed during this difficult time. In keeping with Hugh's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd., on Monday, June 1 at 2:00 p.m., Rev. Janet Walker officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Cancer Care Manitoba at Riverview Health Centre. My Lagan She Flows Softly... GLEN LAWN FUNERAL HOME 982-7550
