JOAN NORMA BURNSIDE May 14, 1932 - May 23, 2009 On May 23, 2009 Joan passed away peacefully at the Grace Hospital at the age of 77 years after a lengthy and courageous battle with emphysema. Joan was predeceased by her husband Douglas in 1994. Joan leaves to mourn her two sons Bruce and Dave and Dave's partner Rose and her daughters Marisa and Emily. Joan was predeceased by her two brothers Jim (Nina) Cooper and Edward Cooper of Winnipeg. Joan is also survived by nephew Harold (Margret) Cooper of Regina and niece Janet (Bill) Fairbairn of Lethbridge and their families. Joan lived in Winnipeg her entire life and started her working career with Eaton's. After raising her two sons she returned to work in the Dietary Department at the General Hospital. Joan spent her remaining career working in Dietary at the Grace General Hospital where she retired in 1992 after 21 years of service. Joan had many friends in the Courts of St. James, where she lived for the past 40 years, and enjoyed visiting with them in the complex. Joan was fond of camping and fishing with her family and enjoyed the outdoors. In accordance with Joan's wishes, cremation has taken place and a family graveside service was held at Brookside Cemetery on May 29. The family wishes to thank Dr. D. Breckman and Dr. Homic for all of the care provided to Joan in recent years. The family would also like to thank the staff at the Grace Hospital for the care provided to Joan and the support provided from past co-workers still working in Dietary Department at the Grace Hospital. As well, the family would like to thank all the staff of The St. Boniface Hospital, as just under two years ago Joan had faced another serious life threatening battle. Thanks to the tremendous care given by all the doctors, nurses and staff, Joan was able to have two more quality years before her passing. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations could be made to Mom's favourite charities, the Siloam Mission or the Grace Hospital Foundation.
