HELEN EXTENCE 1928 - 2009 Helen Extence passed away peacefully on May 26, 2009. She leaves behind her loving husband of 59 years, Tom Extence. Her family was with her and supported her to the very end. Her eldest son, Bob, his wife Gale in Ontario and their daughters, Amanda and Karla, her daughter Susan and husband Peter in Alberta, and youngest son John in Winnipeg, as well all of her extended family and friends will miss her dearly. Helen was born an only child in Pembroke ON and grew up surrounded by love and respect, traits she would use to raise her own children. She married Tom, her high school sweetheart in 1950 and followed him around the western part of Canada while he established his career. They settled in Winnipeg in the 1970s and put down deep roots, raised a family and built strong friendships. Helen lived to see her three children find success in their own lives and careers, and to see her granddaughters, Amanda and Karla mature and start careers of their own. Those who knew her were immediately wrapped up in her warmth and compassion, and dazzled by her smile that never seemed to fade, even in the last year when she endured many personal setbacks. A fine example of her personality is in the impact she left on her new friends at the Sturgeon Creek Phase 2 retirement home in the last year. She will miss them and be missed by them. If one could choose only one word to describe Helen, the word would be class. She was of a generation that we will never see again. A woman of courage, determination and compassion. She lived a life of service to her family, her friends and her community. She will be greatly missed. Thanks to the Riverview Hospital for the wonderful care they gave her. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honour to the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7. The family sincerely thanks everyone for their support and understanding during this difficult time. A memorial service and interment took place at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, Friday, May 29 with family members present. Chapel Lawn 885-9715
