Fernie was born on March 8, 1929 in Notre Dame de Lourdes, MB and grew up on the family farm with his eight brothers, one sister and parents Pierre and Annette. He was educated locally in his native French language, later learning English on his own. Fernie moved to Winnipeg where he worked as a baker, then moved to Scarth, MB to join his family on a new farm. It was there that he first worked in oil field construction and would continue to work in oil and gas for the rest of his career. On October 20, 1956 Fernie married the love of his life Josie Spurrill of Dunrea, MB. His work took them to several communities in Saskatchewan and Manitoba including Scarth, Hirsch, Smiley, Flaxcombe, Melville and Oxbow. It was on the second stay in Melville that it became their permanent home. He worked for Steelman Gas, which became Dome Petroleum, at the Melville Storage Plant. His years of training and continued learning allowed him to advance to ultimately becoming Plant Superintendent until his retirement in 1984. Fernie and Josie then retired to summers at their cabin on Crooked Lake until Fernie's stroke in 2003. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Thursday, May 28, 2009 at St. Henry's Roman Catholic Church, Melville, SK with interment in St. Henry's Parish Cemetery.
