BLANCHE AMELIA MILLEN (nee DILL) 1919 2009 It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Blanche Millen on Thursday, May 28th, 2009 at the age of 89 years at Deer Lodge Centre with her family by her side. Blanche is survived by her son John (Josephine); grandchildren Alia (Eric), Faye, and Tessa; her daughter, Julie (Manasie) and granddaughter Laura. She was predeceased by her husband, Kelvin Millen, 2003, and by her grandson, Kelvin, 2005. Blanche was born in Millvale, Nova Scotia in 1919 to parents Frank and Clara Dill. She grew up in Springhill, Nova Scotia, with five sisters, four brothers, and life-long friend, Eleanor Fox (Fraser). With the start of the war, Blanche decided to enter Nursing and she trained at the Glace Bay General Hospital in Cape Breton. She graduated as a registered nurse in 1943 and immediately joined the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps. She travelled to Europe with the 24 General Hospital, serving in England and in Belgium. She returned to Canada at the end of the war and continued her nursing career. She married Kelvin, New Year's Eve, 1949. Blanche raised her family in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. She was a great mum to her children. In Nova Scotia, Dill enjoyed playing Bridge. Bridge clubs brought her together with her closest friends. Together they shared life and laughter. Also, many nurses she worked with became her lifelong friends. Blanche and her husband moved to Winnipeg in 1999 to be nearer family. Blanche loved her family and she was a wonderful home maker. She had a talent for home cooking, loved good jokes, read each morning paper and completed the crossword puzzle, and she always made time each day to check in with her family and friends. She moved into Deer Lodge Centre earlier this year. We would like to thank the staff of Tower 5 for the kindness and care they gave to our mother and family. Mum, you will always be remembered.
