BALKARAN CYRIL SANKAR It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Balkaran Cyril Sankar on May 26, 2009 at the age of 78. Cyril is survived by his wife Pat of 55 years; and children, Kelly (Nalini), Rob, Mala and Ron (Camille); his siblings, Harold, Gerry, Meena, Bess, Sylvie, his many grandchildren; and Vishnu who considered Dad as a father. Cyril was predeceased by his parents; his brothers, Rawle and Rama; and sister Jocelyn. Cyril immigrated to Winnipeg from Trinidad in 1959 to pursue his academic studies in education at University College (U. of W.) and U. of M., becoming a high school math teacher at St. James Collegiate and eventually, retiring from Westwood Collegiate. Cyril was, and will always be the iconic head of our family, as it was his driving vision to provide a better life for his family in Trinidad, initiating a mass exodus of relatives to adopt Canada as their home. His generosity to his family, friends and his many students stands alone. He was an avid fisherman, had a passion for old cars and liked fixing them. He was an explorer of this country and the things it had to offer. He built schools, houses and lives. He was many things to many people. He will be missed. Please join us in remembering the cherished life of Cyril Sankar on Thursday, June 11 at 2:00 p.m., Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. The Sankar family would like to extend their gratitude to the caring staff at the Grace Hospital (3rd floor) and St. Boniface Hospital (5th floor). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Mr. Sankar was the influential force that put me along the path of becoming an educator. I have now retired and immensely enjoyed my 40 plus years as a teacher. Thanks to Mr. Sankar. I was just telling my son the story and he found this. Sorry I didn't find him earlier. Many thanks and my sympathy to the family. - Posted by: Deocharan B. Mahadeo (Former student) on: Jan 01, 2016
