Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryELIZABETH MARY SIMPSON COPELAND With family at her side, Betty passed away peacefully at home on June 6, 2009. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Doug, Susan, Sandra and Lorne Hiebert, granddaughters Lisa, Traci and Alison, sisters and brother-in-law Marg and Vern Peterson, Joan Davidson, Shirley Harding, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Betty was predeceased by her beloved husband George, parents Alex and Lizzie Hay, sisters Violet Pollard and Irene Harvey. Betty was born on January 10, 1925. Until her marriage to George in 1948, she worked for the Manitoba Telephone System where she made friendships that lasted to this day. In 1968 she went back to work for four years at CNIB. As a young girl she was a highland dancer. Summers were spent at Winnitoba, which she loved, and later at Albert Beach. She loved family gatherings and enjoyed knitting, sewing and cutting out recipes. Until she developed rheumatoid arthritis she enjoyed dancing and curling. She was a longtime member of Transcona Memorial United Church, Unit 3 UCW, Confidence Rebekah Lodge No. 40, the Transcona Ladies Curling Club, MTS TT Club and the Sewing Gang. For many years she taught Sunday school in the kindergarten department. The family would like to thank all the doctors who cared for Betty over the years, the staff at Concordia Hospital and Golden Door, the staff of the Home Care and Palliative Care Programs, in particular Olga, Germaine, Angela, Crystal, Lynda and Donna. Special thanks to Dr. Caners, Marlene and Sophie for their years of care. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday June 12, 2009, at Transcona Memorial United Church, 209 Yale Ave. W., with Reverend Jeff Cook officiating. Interment to follow with her husband George at Transcona Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends so wish, donations may be made to Transcona Memorial United Church, the Arthritis Society or a charity of your choice.
