LEONA COX It is with tremendous sadness we announce the passing of my best friend and special wife, Leona Violet Cox at Concordia Hospital on June 6, 2009 at 65 years of age. Leona suffered from pancreatic and liver cancer. Leona was born in Winnipeg on September 19, 1943. She was predeceased by her mother and father, Bernice and Albert Mykatowich and her brother Mitchel Mykatowich. Leona worked at Safeway in Winnipeg and married Martin in Winnipeg on September 7, 1984 before moving to Calgary where she again worked for Safeway before opening her own business, The Wallpaper Market, she was really into decorating! After returning to Winnipeg in 1997 for a short stay, they subsequently settled on an acreage North West of Stonewall, where they lived until Leona's death. Leona is survived by loving husband Martin, daughter Karen (Mike) Keating, sons Kevin (Patty) Johnson and Kenneth Johnson, grandchildren Alisha, Tyler and Kelsey Keating, Mandy, Peter and Katelyn Johnson, Kayla and Derek Johnson and her two cats Smokey and Bandit, along with near family Carol and Randy Ritchie and sons Jason, Ryan, Bradley and Matthew. Leona had a tremendously outgoing personality, she got along with everyone she met, and made lots of friends in and around the Stonewall area. She was very active in curling, and most recently President and Past President of the Manitoba Golden Gals Curling Club, and active with the Stonewall, Argyle and Stony Mountain Curling Clubs. Summertime saw her regularly on the golf links, as well as tending to her large garden. She was also a great traveler and Leona and Martin enjoyed visiting many countries around the world. Leona wished to be cremated. A memorial service led by ministers Wayne and Judy Johnson to be held at MacKenzie Funeral Chapel, 433 Main St., Stonewall on Thursday, June 11 at 1:30 p.m. followed by a reception at the Stonewall Legion. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date. We request a memorial donation be made in Leona's name to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9. Leona loved life and will be sorely missed! We love you Leona! MacKenzie Funeral Home, Stonewall in care of arrangements.

My belated condolences to Martin on the passing of your beloved Leona. I first met Leona one summer when I was doing holiday relief work at the Kildare & Woyota store. I was impressed by her friendlessness and big smile. That store was built for the future and what a PR person she was for any first time customers. We met again many years later in the HR department where we worked together for many years. Her personality was excellent for her position in the department. After leaving Safeway, I would run into her daughter Karen who worked in the Safeway in-store bakery. She was just like her mother, inherited her personality and smile. I did not take the paper and was shocked when I ran into Karen and asked how her mother was, only to find out she had passed away. Thank you for all the memories working together. It is unfortunate to work all those years, then to be taken too soon and not to enjoy your golden years. God Bless, Rest in Peace. - Posted by: Colin Dederick (co-worker) on: Dec 20, 2021
