JOHANNA GERRITDINA MAARHUIS (formerly BRIK) (nee BROEKSMA) With her family at her side, Johanna Maarhuis, much loved Mother, Oma and Great-Oma passed away on June 10, 2009 at the age of 87 at Concordia Hospital. Johanna was predeceased by her son Edo in 1954 and grandson Bryan in 1972. Johanna was also predeceased by husband Jan Brik in 1974 and husband Harry Maarhuis in 1996. Her only sister Willemina passed away in 2004. Johanna was born in Enschede, the Netherlands on April 2, 1922, the daughter of Albert and Dirkje Broeksma. Johanna married Jan Brik on July 5, 1944. In 1957 she and her family immigrated to Canada and joined her sister Willemina and brother-inlaw Henk Vandenberg and their family. Johanna and her family enjoyed many years of camping and fishing with friends at White Lake. Johanna and Jan returned to the Netherlands twice to visit family and friends. After her husband Jan passed away Johanna married Harry Maarhuis in 1976. They enjoyed 20 happy years together, traveling to Arizona, the Netherlands and visiting family in Ontario. They loved volunteering in the Dutch Pavilion at Folklorama and attending their grand-children's soccer games. She enjoyed doing crafts such as crocheting, needlepoint and knitting. She shopped with enthusiasm, had a great sense of fashion and enjoyed keeping up with the latest styles. Johanna was a member of the Covenant Christian Reformed Church for 52 years. She loved singing and was a member of the church Seniors Choir for many years. Johanna(Mother, Oma and Great-Oma) will be deeply missed by her daughter Atie and son-in-law Gerrit Brakel, her grandchildren Joanne and Robert(Chérie) whom she loved so much and was so very proud. Her wonderful great-grandsons Alexandre, Lachlan and Andrew made many pictures and crafts for her to enjoy. She will be remembered by her brother-in-law Henk Vandenberg and her many nieces and nephews, especially Wilma and Joe Staska. Henk was a great source of companionship to her, especially over the last few years when they lived in the same apartment block and could visit often. She will be missed by her stepchildren, especially Marty(Debbie) Maarhuis from Dunville, Ontario and their children Rebecca (Randy, great-granddaughter Kaitlyn) MacCarthy, Ryan(Bryar) and Kevin. The family would like to thank the staff on N1South, Concordia Hospital for the wonderful care they provided to Johanna. A memorial service will be held on Saturday June 13, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Covenant Christian Reformed Church, 653 Knowles Ave. with Pastor Ken Douma officiating. A private family interment will take place at Green Acres Memorial Gardens.
