STELLA CHANAS It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother and granny at the age of 79 at the Betel home on June 15, 2009 with family at her side. She will also be sadly missed by her sister Rose Werestiuk, as well as numerous nieces and nephew family and friends. Stella was predeceased by her husband Michael in 2002; her parents, Maria and Alex Hunnie; sisters, Sophie, Ann and Mary, brothers, Harry, Joe, John, Alex, Steve, Bill and Mike. Stella was born in Libau on February 16, 1930. On May 29, 1948 she married Mike Chanas and together they lived, worked and raised their children on the family farm. Stella and Mike's door was always open to the neighbours who were also considered as part of the family. Stella was a very caring and generous mother who cherished wonderful times with family and friends. Although most of her years she struggled with MS it never stopped her from enjoying life. Stella had a passion for cooking, baking, knitting, and bingo. In 1995 they sold the farm and moved to Selkirk where they resided at the Knights Centre. She met many friends there and enjoyed her time chatting with her friends over morning coffee, working the lunch program, evening card games, bingo and organizing trips to South Beach Casino. In 2008 Stella's illness took her to the Betel Nursing home where she peacefully passed away. The family would like thank all staff at the Betel home for taking such good care of Mom during her stay, and their compassionate care during her time of need. Prayers will be held on Friday, June 19 at 7:00 p.m. at the Gilbart Funeral Chapel in Selkirk. Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, June 20 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Johns Ukrainian Catholic Church, Poplar Park, MB, with Fr. Peter Chorney officiating. Interment will follow in the Churchyard cemetery. Her pallbearers will be Rodney Fitkowski, Jay Gushta, Will Eastman, Don Boulton, Derrick Reeves and David Phill. Honorary pallbearers are Cole Pippo and Conner Helwer. In lieu of flowers, if friends and family so desire, donations in Stella's memory can be made to the MS Society of Canada, 100-1465 Buffalo Place, Winnipeg, MB., R3T 1L8. VICHNAYA PAMYAT.
