KATHERINE FINGLER (nee FLATT) It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Katherine (Kay) Fingler at Concordia Hospital in Winnipeg, June 14, 2009. She was 102 years of age. Katherine leaves behind many family members and friends. She will be greatly missed by her daughter Lorna Zelmer (Allan), daughter-in-law Marian Fingler, grandchildren Derek Fingler (Leslie), Karen Karlberg (Ward), Loral Lacko (Larry), and Carla Zelmer (Tony Szumigalski), great-grandchildren Dan and Jane Fingler, Robyn Karlberg (Graham Brown) and Justin and Evan Lacko, sister-in-law Helen Flatt and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Sophia (nee Schmidt) and Jacob Flatt, husband George Fingler, son Gordon and grandson Barry Fingler and her siblings Ludwig, Philip, Henry, Jacob, Philip, Karolina, Maria, Adam, Eva, Sophia. George, Leidea, Wilhelm and Christina. She was born in Mafeking (Waldersee), Manitoba. She had great admiration for her parents and often spoke fondly of her childhood years in the country. In her late teens she moved to Winnipeg with her sister Karolina to obtain work. In July 1928, she married George Fingler and the union was blessed with two children, Gordon and Lorna. Family was central to Katherine and she was always happiest in the company of her family. She also had many friends, whom she cherished. Katherine had a strong faith which was nurtured through her long term membership at St. Paul's and Grace Lutheran Churches. She enjoyed her family' ties there as well. Katherine was a very creative and resourceful person. After the sudden passing of George in 1964, she supported herself with her skills with fabrics. A self-taught seamstress, she created many bridal gowns and other garments, and also excelled at knitting, tatting, crocheting and needlework. Katherine lived independently until age 101 (supported by family and Home Care services), and received excellent care from the staff of Kildonan Personal Care Centre for the final nine months of her life. Viewing will take place Friday, June 19 at Klassen Funeral Home, 1897 Henderson Hwy. from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Grace Lutheran Church on Saturday, June 20 at 11:00 a.m. A private family interment is scheduled for June 20 at 10:00 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends desire, donations in memory of Katherine may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, or to a charity of their choice.
