ANTONIETTA MARKIW On June 17, 2009 at Holy Family Nursing Home in Winnipeg, Antonietta Markiw (nee Calvaresi), beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully at the age of 93 years. She is survived by three sons and their spouses, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, Ivan (Helen) of Calgary, and children Michael, John, Anna (Byron) Charbonneau and greatgranddaughter Clara, Gabriel (Lorraine) of Winnipeg and children Adrian, and Dominic, Jancarlo (Jeannette) of Winnipeg and children Anthony and Taisa. She was predeceased by husband Andrew; parents, Alberto and Giuseppina, and brother Giovanni. Antonietta was born April 19, 1916 in San Benedetto del Tronto, Italy. She was a telephone operator in Ascoli Piceno, Italy during the early days of telephones. She met and married an attractive Ukrainian officer serving in the British 8th Army during the Second World War. She immigrated to Canada with her husband and young son in December of 1948, and settled in Winnipeg, later becoming the mother of two more boys. Her children came first in everything she did and she was mamma to all. She always maintained a bit of Italy in her home through language, food and customs while at the same time encouraging her husband's Ukrainian heritage. Her habit of singing old Italian songs in the kitchen, suited up in her apron, while whipping up a feast, created an infectious happiness for all who met her. Prayers will be said on Sunday June 21, 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Monday, June 22 at 10:00 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, 390 Marion Street with Father John Mostivsky as Celebrant. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery. We thank the Holy Family Nursing Home, St. Francis Unit for the loving care and support during her last years. If friends so desire, donations may be made to Holy Family Nursing Home.
