Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN ALTHAM JACKSON July 22, 1919 - June 13, 2009 Musican, soldier and collector of Canadian and British militaria and vehicles. Jack died peacefully on June 13 at the Kipnes Centre for Veterans in Edmonton where he had lived for almost three years. His only daughter, Lorna and her husband, Allan Bonner, were at his bedside along with three wonderfully caring members of the nursing staff. Jack was predeceased by his dearly loved wife Kristin Anna in 1999, and by his three younger brothers, David, William and James. He was a proud and loving father to Lorna and grandsons, Michael Richard Jackson Bonner, a choral scholar at Brasenose College, Oxford and Christian Altham Carson Bonner, who has made music his career. They owe their love of music and their talent to their Grampa. Jack joined the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in 1937 and went with his Regiment from Winnipeg to England after the outbreak of the Second World War. He later joined the Provost Corps and served with them in England until the end of the war. Upon returning to Winnipeg, he joined the RCAF Band as first trumpet and moved to Edmonton. There he joined the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and played with many other bands. After retiring from the RCAF, he joined the Loyal Edmonton Regiment (4 PPCLI) and completed his military service as a Warrant Officer. He also worked at the Cameron Library at the U of A for 17 years. Jack, or John, or JJ as some of the Kipnes staff liked to call him, had a genuine talent for friendship and his many friends from the worlds of music and collecting militaria continued to keep in touch, right up to the end. For that, his daughter, son-in-law and grandsons are deeply grateful. We are also so thankful for the kind and loving care he was given by the staff at the Kipnes. He used to say if he could only park his military Jeep in front of the place, it would have been perfect. A memorial service is planned for the late summer with interment in White Rock, BC. Jacks leaves scores of nieces and nephews in Winnipeg and sister-in-law Gail Halldorson.

My grandmother, Annie Heaton, nee Jackson was the sister of Jack's father, Altham. I remember Jack coming to stay with my parents, Tom and Amy Heaton when I was a child. I also remember Uncle Altham and Auntie Ivy visiting too. Today I met up with relatives at the funeral of John Thompson who was Kathleen's son and my cousin. Kathleen was the daughter of Annie Heaton. I found the tribute to Jack very interesting and it brought back happy memories. - Posted by: Margaret Eastwood (Daughter of his cousin) on: Mar 23, 2015

I came upon the news of the passing of John just tonight. As a boy, I was a student of John's, having taken up the trumpet for several years. We also shared at that time a common interest in militaria collecting. Although many, many years have passed since that time in life I never lost track of the fond memories of the time I spent with John way back when. He was such a fine fellow and interesting man. My most sincere condolences go out to his family and friends. Ian Shoctor, Edmonton - Posted by: Ian Shoctor (ex student and one time friend) on: Feb 23, 2012
