F. MAY SQUIRES Passed away peacefully, on June 23, 2009 in Porteous Lodge, May Squires, 97, resident of Saskatoon for the past 12 years. The eldest of five daughters born to Jack and Bessie Squires between 1912 and 1922 at Tessier, SK. May was born May 27, 1912 and is survived by two sisters, Alice Sibbald in Edmonton AB and Phoebe Hodgins in Santa Barbara CA, a brother-in-law Jack McIntosh, along with numerous nephews and nieces. Predeceased by two sisters, Jacqueline Coles in 2007, Lena McIntosh in 2003, and three brothers-in-law, Mervin Coles in 1990, John Hodgins in 1987, and Frank Sibbald in 1979. May completed her schooling at Tessier before venturing away from the family home to Saskatoon. In her early years she worked as a housekeeper. After sickness and quarantine, May recuperated with family in Renfrew, ON and Carman, MB before settling in Winnipeg where cousin Lila Weir assisted her in getting employment with the Motor Vehicle Branch. May was able to turn it into a full time career, working there for 36 years before retiring in 1977. May's adventurous and inquisitive spirit led her to travel extensively around the world. She was a longtime member of the Craft Guild in Winnipeg, and a volunteer at various arts, crafts and charity functions. Besides handcrafts, May was an accomplished seamstress. Moving to Saskatoon in 1997, May introduced her sister Jacky to snow-birding with Alice in Santa Barbara and Arizona where they shopped and explored with sister Phoebe. A zest for life and sharpness of wit remained with May all her life. Respecting May's wishes for no funeral service, she will be cremated. Special thanks to staff at Porteous Lodge for their kindness, dignity and care. Email condolences may be sent to mail@saskatoonfuneralhome.com. Arrangements are entrusted to Saskatoon Funeral Home, phone 306 - 244-5577.
