EVELYN MARTENS October 4, 1933 - June 30, 2009 It is with sadness that the family of Evelyn Martens announces her death on Tuesday, June 30. Evelyn was born in the Watrous/Meadow Lake area in Saskatchewan, where she spent her early years and where she attended school. In the mid 40s, her family moved to a farm northwest of Steinbach. In her late teens, Evelyn moved to Winnipeg, and worked at the University of Manitoba. It was during this time she met Peter Martens. They married in August 1953, lived in Winnipeg, and raised their family here. Evelyn enjoyed cooking and baking and her family was often treated to I'm trying a new recipe. Would you like to come for supper? Evelyn also spent hours sewing, crocheting and knitting, gardening and participating in Church activities. When they both retired, they enjoyed many winters traveling to various destinations. Evelyn is survived by her husband of 56 years, Peter Martens, her sons Dave (Margaret), Bob (Wendy) and daughter Donna (Greg), four grandchildren, Sandy, Storie, Landin and Jake and one great grandson, Kory. She is also survived by one brother, Al Martens of BC, in-laws, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, George and Agnes Thiessen and her sister Velma. A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 3, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. at Sterling Mennonite Fellowship, 1008 Dakota Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba. If friends so desire, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3E 0V9. Arrangements by: Birchwood Funeral Chapel 1-888-454-1030 or 346-1030
