MARY (DORIS) BARR Peacefully on July 12, 2009 at Kildonan Personal Care Centre, Doris passed away at the age of 88. Doris was the daughter of Malcolm and Susan Barr, formerly of Starbuck and Winnipeg, Manitoba. She was predeceased by sister Marjorie O'Neill and three brothers, John, Harold and Ernest. Doris is survived by sister Belva Hancox of White Lake Manitoba and brothers Ron of Barrie, Ontario, Ross of Niagara Falls, Ontario, as well as numerous beloved nieces and nephews. Doris leaves many friends in the baseball communities of Canada and USA. She started her baseball career as pitcher with the Winnipeg Ramblers and Regina Army and Navy Bombers, then went on to a nine year career in the American Girls Professional Baseball League ( A League of Their Own ) in the USA. Doris was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, the Canadian Hall of Fame in St. Mary's, Ontario, the Manitoba Hall of Fame in Brandon and the Softball Association in Winnipeg. Doris loved getting out on the golf course and her favourite pastime was family get togethers where she could joke with and tease her many nieces and nephews. Doris worked several years in the accounting departments at Manitoba Health Sciences Centre and Grace Hospital, where she made many friends. Doris's family would like to say a special thanks to Cathy Seman, her niece and caregiver over several years, as well as the wonderful staff at Kildonan Personal Care Centre. A visitation will be held Tuesday, July 14, 2009 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday, July 15, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home. A Memorial service will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue West, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Thursday, July 16, 2009 at 12:30 p.m., followed by an interment in the Lasting Tribute Chapel and a reception. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba are greatly appreciated.
