ALAN LAWTON GRANT Peacefully on July 10, 2009, our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away at the age of 87, at the Lions Manor Personal Care Centre. Alan was predeceased by his wife Phyllis (nee Kaufman), his parents, Roy and Ellen Grant, and his sisters, Olive (George) Dunn and Gwen (Franklin) Turner. Alan is survived by his daughter Carolyn (Gordon) Swann, son Robert, and beloved grandchildren, Daniel (Tracy) Rugg and Kimberly (Ryan) Howard; great-grandchildren, Makaela and Brook Rugg and Nathan and Rylan Howard. Alan was born in Carberry, Manitoba and raised in the St. James District of Winnipeg. He served in the Second World War with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. He was a corporal when he landed at Juno Beach on D-Day and became an acting sergeant before he was injured in Northern France in July of 1945. After the war Alan returned to Winnipeg where he began a new job at The Ford Motor Company where he met Phyllis. After a brief courtship they married in 1948 and moved back to St. James to start a family and to make many lifelong friends. Alan left Ford and started a long career as a buyer with CAE Aircraft. Dad was very active with the Royal Winnipeg Rifle Association helping to run the yearly dance and golf tournament for many years. He was a longtime member of the Royal Canadian Legion and an active member in the St. James Lodge No. 121 of the Masons. After Alan retired he and Phyllis spent many happy summers at their cottage in Sandy Hook playing golf, entertaining friends and relatives and enjoying the wildlife visitors to their retirement place. Alan was a very fair and thoughtful man. He was strong and proud especially of his family and instilled in them many of his values. He was a devoted and loving husband to Phyllis for many years and he loved his children and grandchildren dearly. After moving into the Kiwanis Courts on Ness Avenue and Phyllis' passing shortly after, Alan made many close friends and got to know the staff very well. He was very appreciative of his friendship with Dorothy as it made his life a little bit brighter especially near the end. He was very thankful for all the assistance he received from the staff before he left. We would like to thank the staff of the Grace Hospital 3rd floor and the Lions Manor Personal Care Centre for their care and compassion during this time. A memorial service to celebrate Alan's life will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue on Thursday, July 16, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Alan's honour to the Parkinson's Society, 302-171 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 1M4. Chapel Lawn 885-9715
