WALTER JOSEPH STANLEY WADE March 30, 1913- July 9, 2009 A Gilwell Scouter has gone home. In his 97th year Walter passed away at Victoria General Hospital on July 9, 2009. Phyllis, his beloved wife of 67½ years, died in 2008. He is survived by his brother, Stanley (Vida) of Cumberland, Ontario and brother-in-law Larry Jones of Perth, Australia. He will be missed and remembered by daughters Phyllis (Steve) Waite, Merylie (Jim) Houston, Karen (Bob) Binding and sons Jim (Pauline) and Bill. Grandchildren Robert (Pam), Michael (Caroline), and Peter Waite; Sara, Joel (Tana) and Rebecca (Antonio) Houston; Rob, Dave and Kathy Binding; Joy (Duane), Julie (James) Wade. Great-grandchildren Kyle and Tyler Waite; Charlotte and Penelope Houston; Lucy and Milo Houston-Jardim; Anika and Eliza Binding. Walter was born in Montreal and spent his early years helping his father run Stanley Steamer Trucks, participating in sports and Scouts. He was a Scouter in Montreal and Moncton. He was presented his Gilwell beads by Lord Baden-Powell himself in 1935, a source of lifelong pride. Walter worked for Canadian National Railways for almost 50 years in freight claims in Montreal, Moncton and Winnipeg. He retired in 1978 as Manager of Merchandise Claims for western Canada. Avid downhill skier, hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman, Dad taught all his children to ski and the ways of the outdoors. He enjoyed many happy years with Mom at the cottage at East Blue Lake hunting and fishing and playing lake rules rummy on rainy days. As per his wishes, his body has been donated to the University of Manitoba Faculty of Medicine, Human Anatomy and Cell Sciences, for education and research. There will be a Memorial Gathering of family and friends on Sunday, July 19th at 2:00 p.m. at Church of the Good Shepherd Parish Hall, 673 Silverstone Ave., Winnipeg. Arrangements for Burial and Committal Service for the ashes of both Phyllis and Walter Wade will be announced when his body is released by the University. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
