Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryREGINALD ALLAN PATTERSON B.S.A., M.B.A., PH.D Dr. Allan Patterson passed away on Thursday, July 23, 2009 at the age of 90, at the St. Boniface Hospital. He was predeceased by his wife of 41 years, Edith Charlotte (née Freed), his parents, and his brothers Douglas of Toronto and Gerald of Caledon East. He is survived by his nieces, Patricia (Hans) Fleischmann of Midland, Kim (Satch) Beraldo of Caledon East, Jan (Joe) Flynn of Toronto and Sharon (Rob) Edwards of Grand Valley; nephews Gregory Patterson of Caledon East and Adam (Kathie) Patterson of Bolton, and all their families as well as many other nieces and nephews. Al was born in Ottawa on July 12, 1919, the son of Harold Allan and Emma Lucille (née Denny) Patterson. At an early age the family moved to Capreol where he received his elementary education, and then to Barrie, where he obtained his secondary education at Barrie Collegiate Institute. He attended the Ontario Agricultural College (now part of the University of Guelph) and received his B.S.A. degree from the University of Toronto in 1943. He was employed for seven years by the Dominion Rubber Company Limited (now Uniroyal), Tire Division, in Kitchener and Winnipeg and for fifteen years by the T. Eaton Co. Limited, Winnipeg store. On leaving Eaton's in 1965 he returned to university, enrolling the University of Western Ontario School of Business Administration (now the Richard Ivey School of Business) and receiving his M.B.A. degree from Western in 1967. After two years on Western's business school faculty he enrolled in the Graduate School, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, and received his PH.D degree in industrial relations in 1975. In 1974 he joined the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Administrative Studies (later the Faculty of Management and now the I.H. Asper School of Business). He retired from the university as an associate professor in 1988 following his election in the general election of April 25 as the Liberal M.L.A. for Radisson, under the leadership of now Senator Sharon Carstairs. In his retirement years he remained active in Liberal Party affairs. For several years he was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Fort Garry and of the Wildewood Club. He curled and occasionally golfed with the Wildewood Seniors Recreation Association. He had been a member of the vestry of St. Bartholomew Anglican Church, member of the board of the Winnipeg Public Library and of the board of the Winnipeg Library Foundation. He was active in the Association of Former Manitoba Member of the Legislative Assembly. In 2002 he received a Queen's Golden Jubilee medal from the Honourable Sharon Carstairs. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the staff at St. Boniface Hospital 5E for their excellent care. Also thank you to Dr. John Mayba. In keeping with Al's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Friday, July 31 at 2:00 p.m. in St. Bartholomew Anglican Church, 881 Autumnwood Drive.
