Recently I shared some of my childhood memories with my family and recalled the delivery rides that I was so fortunate to have taken with Joe in the summers of 1969 and 1970. Joe worked for the Independent Fish Company and I was a young teenager of one of the owner’s daughters who worked in the office. Joe was a man of great strength, fortitude and compassion…he was well liked by everyone at “The Plant.” There were stories of Joe’s physical feats that astounded those who had completely underestimated his abilities and tenacity. Joe graciously accepted me as a delivery helper…though I suspect that my presence actually hampered his daily labours. I sat on an old wooden pop box where a cushioned passenger seat would normally have been…it was an honour to have that seat and be in Joe’s company. His van was not equipped with air conditioning or refrigeration…needless to say, efficiency was essential to beat the heat of the afternoon. As we drove, the heat of the summer morning would soon become oppressive. I had the pleasure of accompanying Joe to a few of his favour air conditioned spots…for a coffee and a slice of apple pie ala mode…these were hidden gems in the core of Winnipeg’s old city centre…places that I would never had discovered on my own. The smell of bakeries baking up donuts in the early morning hours still brings back that particular joy of my youth. Although I cannot remember what we talked about, I remember the feeling of ease of the conversations…of acceptance and heartfelt offerings of his wisdom. I am sure that his legacy and spirit lives on in his family members and those who had the good fortune of spending time with him. Dear Uncle Leo, Thank you for what you have contributed to my life, an inspiration to live with out frivolity, solitude is important and being alone is is not uncommon. I only met you a few times when I was very young but my Dad (Aldeo) talks often of his childhood memories and you are apart of them. I wish I could have known you better...I hope you are with Grandma and Grandpa now, love from your niece Teresa - Posted by: Teresa Mondor Barlow (Niece) on: Apr 06, 2012

Dear Uncle Leo, I met you once when I was 14 years old; you were always the mysterious Uncle Leo! You were a very nice, respectable man and I am so glad I met you! I am so sorry for the Family's loss. I know that Joseph Alexander Raphael (Dad) missed you. Rest in peace and Thank You - Posted by: Sandra Mondor (Family) on: Aug 23, 2009
