FREDERICK (FRED) THOMAS BARRATT January 30, 1931 - July 26, 2009 After a courageous two year battle with cancer, Fred passed away peacefully with family at his side. He is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 51 years Jean, sons Rod (Penny) of Victoria, BC and Bryan (Chantal) of Langley, BC, plus beloved grandkids Cole and Savannah and Samantha and Carson, as well as many friends and relatives. Fred grew up in Thunder Bay and enjoyed telling stories of his many childhood escapades! He returned to Winnipeg and spent 32 years with Air Canada, especially enjoying his monthly lunch' with the Gaffers' gang, and in retirement he and Jean enjoyed traveling. They spent 14 enjoyable winters in Florida; always ready for a party, they loved getting together with friends for drinks, dancing, golf, playing cards, walks on the beach, (more drinks), or just hanging out'. Fred enjoyed being outdoors, the tribulations' of family camping, and as an avid cyclist, a long ride through the Florida or Manitoba countryside. He and Jean spent many happy weekends at special friend Ina's Brereton Lake cottage; going for a paddle in the canoe, building a fire, or just being his usual Mr. Fixit'. He was a content and happy man, enjoying everything and every day in life. A basic pleasure was simply having a beer in front of the fireplace. From big occasions to having a coffee at a roadside cafe with a stranger, he was always making other people happy, and the first to say how can I help'! Children especially took to him and smiled with him, loving his patient kindness. He was so proud of his family and enjoyed many visits to BC ... he truly was the apple of his grandkids' eye', and they of his; they will cherish Grandpa Freddio' forever! Thanks so much to all for your support, especially our angel Pat. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Fred's life will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 27 at his home; all are welcome to attend. If you'd like to share a short story, please email bryan.barratt@hotmail.com, or feel free to say a few words in person. Flowers gratefully declined. If desired, donations to Dr. Maxwell's Endowment Fund' (for oncology training), c/o Victoria Hospital Foundation, 2340 Pembina Hwy., Winnipeg R3T 2E8, sincerely appreciated. Dad , we are so proud of you, we love you, and we will miss you deeply. May you continue your journey, and as you always taught us... make somebody smile! .
