ALLENBY KITCHENER BALLENDINE It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Al Ballendine on July 24, 2009 at Poseidon Care Centre. He was born in Sandy Lake, Manitoba on February 18, 1924. He spent his early years in Lockport and at the age of 16 joined the Navy. He travelled the world, received his accounting training in the Navy and fought in the Second World War and the Korean War. While recuperating from war injuries at Deer Lodge Hospital, he met a nurse, Nancy, who was to become his future wife of 59 years. It was love at first sight for Al. He spent many years working for the City of St. James, City of Transcona (Allenby Crescent was named after Al), and retired from the Federal Department of Indian Affairs. He enjoyed a little golf and curling, was a season ticket holder with the Blue Bombers and Winnipeg Jets, and latterly sports on the satellite dish, especially the Vancouver Canucks. Al always had a great love for his many dogs. Al was predeceased by his wife Nancy, parents Alice and John Henry Ballendine, brother Walter and sister Marge. He is survived by his daughters Barbara (Ken) Howie and Nancy (Don) Toyne, his grandchildren Brad (Angela) Howie, Amy Howie and best friend Scott, Kevin (Rachael) Toyne of Toronto, Brett (Jacqueline) Toyne, great-grandchildren Ava and Jake Howie, and Devon and Avery Toyne. Chosen granddaughter Vickie and his chosen great-grandchildren Keaton, Alex and Brady, sister-in-law Olive Wilson and dear friend Judy DeFer and several nieces, nephews and their families. Al was a loving Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great-grandfather. Pa, we all love you so very, very much. We will always miss you and miss all the special things you did with each one of us. We will hold our special memories of you close. Watch over us and be at peace. At Pa's request, cremation has taken place and there will be no service. The families will gather for a celebration of Pa's life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3 or a charity of your choice.
