WILLIAM GORDON HERR
Born: Jul 07, 1919
Date of Passing: Aug 02, 2009
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWILLIAM GORDON HERR July 7, 1919 - August 2, 2009 The Final Salute Dad passed peacefully in his room at Concordia Place surrounded by his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Mary Dorothy (Mann), sons, Greg (Evelyn), Brad (Yvonne), and Trev (Cathy), sister Bertha Hull, grandchildren Jennifer and Cassandra. He was born and raised in Winnipeg, answered his call to duty in 1942 serving with the RCAF, 177th Squadron as a beaufighter pilot stationed in Allahabad, India in the Second World War. His recollections and memories of his war adventures around the dinner table will be sadly missed but his Hindustani phrases will be forever cherished. Following the war he began a career in the insurance industry, eventually starting his own business under the family name. He was a real people person and believed in the personal touch, which made him many friends and a highly respected member of the community. He loved his work and even more his coffee breaks at the Sals, so much so that he didn't retire until 73. Woodworking was his after hours passion and many hours were spent in the basement workshop. Some of his house remodelling projects caused mom much aggravation for the duration but the final result was well worth it. Beautiful pieces of handcrafted furniture will be enjoyed by family members and friends for many years. He was an active member of Greenwood United Church (although most of his singing was in the shower). Ace of burma', G', pops', sterling moss', silver fox', 'the old boy' 'pippy II', and 'gramps' were monikers that family and friends will forever remember. Many thanks to the health care team at Concordia Place for their high quality care and compassion. A celebration of dad's life will be held at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Ave. (west of the Perimeter), Winnipeg, on Friday, August 7, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. Interment and reception to follow. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be greatly appreciated. Grandchildren Carolyn and Sandra will now have Grandpa with them in heaven. Over and Out
