SHARON SHINEWALD With great sorrow, the Shinewald and Putter families announce the passing on August 5, 2009 of Sharon Tobi Shinewald (nee Putter). Sharon was only 64 years old. She leaves behind her beloved husband of 42 years, Ed Shinewald; her seven kids, Benjamin Shinewald and Marice Hart, Alix Shinewald and Todd Stevens, Jeremy Shinewald, and Michael Shinewald and Jodi Kovitz; her three wonderful grandchildren Orly, Shai and Lily; her two mothers , Rochelle Putter and Sophie Shinewald; her siblings Judith Putter, David Putter and Daniel Putter and countless other loving relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her father, Joe Putter, her father-in-law, Hy Shinewald, and her four beloved grandparents, Sander and Chaya Putter and Levi and Fanny Sommer. Sharon was born in 1944 in Montreal but her entire life was rooted in Winnipeg and, in the summers, Winnipeg Beach. She taught French and cooking at Joseph Wolinsky Collegiate for many years to hundreds of students, many of whom still use her recipes. Sharon was very active in the Jewish and broader communities, was a voracious reader and an exceptionally gifted cook. She also traveled the world over and over, including stops in Israel countless times. As well, she spoke English, French, Hebrew and Yiddish. She built a warm, hectic and open home rooted in Jewish values, where eating together no matter what the time, studying hard and discovering new horizons were prized above all. Sharon's funeral was held at Congregation Etz Chayim and the Rosh Pina Cemetery on August 7, 2009. Pallbearers were brothers David and Daniel Putter, son-in-law Todd Stevens, cousin Hillel Sommer, cousin Ted Wald and friend Merrill Shulman. Honourary pallbearers were dear friends Monty and Gerry Lomow, Susan Kay and Anita Neville. Shiva is being observed at the family home at 321 Park Boulevard North until the morning of Thursday, August 13, with daily services at 7:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Visiting hours are 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. each day. Sharon enjoyed a lifetime of remarkable health and fitness, and descended from a very long line of very old women. Fourteen months ago, however, she was unexpectedly diagnosed with the lung cancer that ultimately proved fatal. The family wishes to thank all those who cared for her during her fight, including Dr. Andrew Maksymiuk and Marissa Rodriguez, the staff at Cancer Care Manitoba, the staff at the Health Sciences Centre's GD4 ward and the staff at the Palliative Care ward at St. Boniface Hospital, all of whom were exceptional. Her cousin Dr. Hillel Sommer was also of huge comfort and assistance. The family also wishes to thank the many, many great friends who helped us throughout. We value that support deeply and are profoundly grateful. Donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba and to the Sharon Shinewald Fund at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba. Sharon had a remarkably full and charmed life she herself said so, even before her diagnosis. Though she packed in more than most people could in 120 years, her life was still much too short. We miss her terribly.
