NORA PHILLIPS (nee MORTON) After a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer disease, Nora Phillips passed away on July 31, 2009. She will be sadly missed by her husband of 58 years, George E. (Bud) Phillips; daughters Mary (Craig) Fardoe; Elizabeth (Michael) Smyth; Laura Phillips (Rob Browne) and son David (Sharon) Phillips; grandchildren, Colleen, Michael, Dustin, Patrick, Bronwyn, Dylan and Jacob; sisters-in-law, Muriel (Don) McCarthy and Betty Morton and many nieces and nephews. Nora was predeceased by her five siblings: Bill Morton; Margaret Fahrni; Dorothy Johnson; Frank Morton and Harry Morton. Nora, the youngest child of William and Mary Morton, was born on January 29, 1927 in Gladstone, MB. She was educated in Gladstone and at Gordon Bell High School in Winnipeg. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Manitoba in 1948 and went to work for the Children's Aid Society of Winnipeg. In 1950, she married Bud and she continued to work in the social services field when they moved to Regina and Montreal. In 1952, they settled back in Winnipeg where they raised their family. When her children were older, Nora went back to work on a part-time basis for Statistics Canada, retiring when she was 67. Through the years, Nora was a volunteer for many organizations including the Home and School Association and the Library Committee at Riverview School; the Y.W.C.A.; the Princess Elizabeth Hospital Guild and the Liberal Party and The Laurier Club. Nora was also a long-time parishioner of St. Alban's Anglican Church. Nora was an avid sports fan who loved the Canadiens, the Jets and the Expos. She was a huge supporter and long time season ticket holder of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Nora also enjoyed traveling, bowling, skating, swimming, riding her bicycle and attending the Reh-Fit Centre. She had great fondness for animals, particularly cats and horses. Although Nora had many other interests such as knitting and reading, (especially the Free Press and Maclean's magazine) she was also committed to her family. She took an interest in her children's activities and was proud of their achievements. She would have truly loved to have been involved in the lives of her grandchildren, but because of Alzheimer disease, this was not possible. The family would like to acknowledge the help and support of the staff of Riverview Health Centre, Rupert's Land Caregiver Services, homecare workers and numerous friends who visited and cared for Nora through the years. A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Riverview Health Centre where Nora lived the last eight years of her life. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations in Nora's memory may be made to Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 120 Donald St., Winnipeg, R3C 4G2; Riverview Health Centre, 1 Morley Ave., Winnipeg, R3L 9Z9; or The Winnipeg Humane Society, 65 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, R3T 0R3.
