JOHN MARTENS John Martens, loving husband, father and Opa, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 16, 2009. He was born to Hans and Elizabeth (nee Pankratz) in Einlage, Ukraine. His life journey took him from there through Germany to Paraguay and finally to Winnipeg in 1952. He became a Journeyman Electrician, working for different companies, ending his career as a Maintenance Electrician at Palliser Furniture. After taking early retirement, he enjoyed golfing, traveling and special times spent with family and friends. His grandchildren held a very special place in his heart. John is survived by his wife Dorothy, his three sons, Herb and wife Katherine and their children, Jillian, Emily and Nick; John Jr., Ed, stepfather Dietrich Hildebrand, his dear Tante Sonja, one uncle Petja in Germany, as well as many other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, one sister and one brother. Thank you to Dr. C. Isaac, Dr. Harris, Valerie, Debbie and the Palliative Care Team. A celebration of John's life will be held on Thursday, August 20, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at Springfield Heights Mennonite Church, 570 Sharon Bay, with interment to follow in Elmwood Cemetery. Viewing at the church prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations to Mennonite Central Committee would be appreciated.
